Major Venezuelan newspaper to be sold

CARACAS, July 5: One of Venezuela’s oldest and most prestigious newspapers has been sold amid increasing government pressure on the country’s press.
The editor in chief of Caracas-based El Universal, Elides Rojas, confirmed that a group of Spanish investors had bought the broadsheet from the family that has run the paper since it was founded 104 years ago.
While neutral reporting in Venezuela is hard to come by after 15 years of polarisation over socialist rule, El Universal has stuck closer than most to the ideal of fact-based, investigative reporting amid a crackdown on media outlets that, like it, have been fiercely critical of the government.
Rojas acknowledged apprehension in the newsroom about whether the paper will follow in the steps of other recently sold news media outlets that have softened their editorial line, but said he had been assured that the paper’s editorial independence would not be compromised.
Partly driving those concerns was the appointment of Jesus Abreu, a former bank manager who is the brother of the famed director of Venezuela’s government-funded system of youth orchestras, to lead the paper.
Yesterday, El Universal employees gathered for a meeting with their new manager. Reporters say Abreu told them that they had been bought by the Spanish company Epalisticia, but deflected most questions about the new owners. After the meeting, reporters hurried to look the company up, but found a scant digital footprint.
President Nicolas Maduro and his predecessor Hugo Chavez have driven most independent journalism from airwaves, using fines and the revocation of licenses to silence critical voices.
Meanwhile, a newsprint shortage combined with government harassment of journalists and media it accuses of plotting its overthrow has made the task of running a Venezuelan newspaper increasingly unappealing. Rumours have been circulating for more than a year that the Mata family, which has run the broadsheet since its founding in 1909, were looking to sell.
In May, El Universal announced that it would cut the size of its daily editions because of the newsprint shortage. The paper now publishes 16 pages a day, down from 24. Circulation has dropped, and newsstands almost immediately sell out of what copies are available.
In the past year, more than a dozen Venezuelan papers have closed or reduced their print editions because of a lack of dollars to buy newsprint. Venezuela’s government has restricted access to foreign currency for 11 years. (AGENCIES)

US coast survives Hurricane Arthur

KILL DEVIL HILLS (US), July 5: Proving far less damaging than feared, Hurricane Arthur left tens of thousands of people without power in a swipe at North Carolina’s dangerously exposed Outer Banks, then brought lousy Fourth of July beach weather to the Northeast as it veered out to sea.
The weather along the narrow barrier islands whose beaches draw hundreds of thousands of tourists every summer had already cleared by yesterday afternoon as Arthur scooted north and its outer bands scraped the Delaware and New Jersey shores. Forecasters predicted the storm would weaken before its centre moves over western Nova Scotia in Canada early today.
While state and local officials worked to restore access to Hatteras Island and help those who had suffered storm and flooding damage, the effects of the hurricane were mostly confined to that part of the state. Farther south, the beaches were once again packed with people soaking up the sun.
Arthur struck North Carolina as a Category 2 storm with winds of 160 kph late Thursday, taking about five hours to move across the far eastern part of the state.
About 40,000 people lost power, and the rush of water from the ocean on one side and the sound on the other side buckled part of North Carolina Highway 12 in a spot on Hatteras Island that was breached in Hurricane Irene in 2011.
Dozens of workers were heading to fix the highway, and the Department of Transportation said it was confident the road would reopen today as long as an underwater sonar test of a key bridge showed no problems.
No injuries or deaths were reported. After praising emergency officials and saying the state dodged a bullet, Gov McCrory noted that all of North Carolina’s beaches were open outside of the Outer Banks and encouraged residents and visitors to enjoy the holiday. He was heading to the beach himself for an Independence Day parade in Southport, a welcome surprise when he expected to be stuck in Raleigh monitoring the storm all day. (AGENCIES)

Senegal prime minister sacked

DAKAR, July 5:  Senegal’s president sacked Prime Minister Aminata Toure, who has only been in power since September, less than a week after her ruling party was beaten in local elections.
“Ms Aminata Toure’s functions have been terminated,” said a decree signed by President Macky Sall yesterday, a copy of which was obtained by AFP.
An official at the president’s office said that the resignation of the prime minister “means that the government has been dissolved”.
Toure, who is 51, is the head of the Alliance for the Republic and was named prime minister last year to replace incumbent Abdoul Mbaye.
Her departure comes less than a week after preliminary results from the June 29 local elections showed defeats for the APR in Dakar and a number of key cities across the country. Official results are still being awaited.
Many members of the government who were running in the local polls were beaten in their strongholds — a blow for the APR, which controlled only a few towns before the election and was hoping to reinforce its local support bases.
More than 5.3 million people were eligible to vote for more than 2,700 councillors across the country.
“Since her defeat by Khalifa Sall, (she) has been in the hot seat,” RTS national radio commented.
However, the governing “Benno Bokk Yaakaar” (Together With The Same Hope) coalition reportedly won in more than 70 percent of the country’s constituencies.
Toure has degrees in economy and management from universities in Senegal, France and the United States and worked for the United Nations in several countries.
She was the second woman prime minister in Senegal after Madior Boye, who headed the government between March 2001 and November 2002.
In her government policy statement in October, Toure promised to meet social demands and restart the country’s economy. (AGENCIES)

5.7 quake hits NE Japan: USGS

TOKYO, July 5:  A 5.7-magnitude quake hit off the coast of northeast Japan today, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
The earthquake struck at 7:42 am (2242 GMT Friday) eight kilometres east-northeast of the city of Miyako at a depth of 44 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.
The Japan Meteorological Agency measured it at 5.8 and said there was no risk of a tsunami.
Japan is situated at the conjuncture of several tectonic plates and experiences a number of relatively violent quakes every year.
But thanks to strict building codes, even powerful quakes that might wreak havoc in other countries frequently pass without causing much damage.
In May a strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook buildings in the capital Tokyo, injuring 17 people. (AGENCIES)

New Irish Labour leader made deputy PM

DUBLIN, July 5:  Joan Burton was elected leader of the Labour Party, the junior partner in Ireland’s coalition government, and was swiftly installed as the country’s deputy prime minister.
Eamon Gilmore, the previous Labour leader and deputy PM, stepped down from both roles in May following huge losses for the party in the local and European Parliament elections.
Burton, 65, had been Labour’s deputy leader since 2007. She retains her post as minister for social protection, leading welfare reform, but is soon expected to reshuffle the Labour ministers in the government.
Burton beat Alex White, a junior health minister, by 77 per cent to 22 per cent in the vote to become Labour’s new leader, state broadcaster RTE reported.
“I’m deeply honoured and humbled to lead our great Labour Party,” she said.
“Many individuals, families and communities have experienced the worst of times since the economic crisis first struck, but I’m optimistic that the best of times are still ahead of us.”
Labour “will be the force that creates a better future for our country”, she said.
Burton is the first female Labour leader.
After the 2011 general election, centre-left Labour joined with centre-right Fine Gael as the junior partner in a coalition government with the largest majority in Irish political history.
The coalition was mandated with improving the republic’s dire finances just months after the previous government sought an USD 115-billion European Union and International Monetary Fund bailout.
Recent polls had shown Labour voters were unhappy with how the party was performing in government despite Ireland exiting the rescue programme in December.
Fine Gael Prime Minister Enda Kenny said he and Burton had agreed to work closely to fulfil the remainder of the government’s term in office, which must end by April 2016.
“I have congratulated Joan Burton today on her election as leader of the Labour Party and confirmed that I have nominated her as Tanaiste (deputy prime minister),” he said in a statement.
“We will meet early next week to discuss the government’s key priorities for the coming period, and changes in the composition of the government.” (AFP)

Honduras in 3rd day of search for trapped miners

MEXICO CITY, July 5: Three miners were rescued after spending more than two days trapped following a collapse at a small, wildcat gold mine in southern Honduras while eight others remain missing.
Moises Alvarado, the head of the country’s emergency commission, said the miners were rescued yesterday and were in “relatively good health, though they are exhausted and showing signs of severe dehydration.” One of the three suffered severe contusions.
Alvarado identified the rescued miners as Byron Maradiaga, Bryan Escalante, 20, and Nehemias Mendez, 28.
A crowd of about 300 residents, volunteers and fellow miners cheered as the rescue workers brought the three miners out one by one in a rescue basket from the mouth of the mine.
Emergency personnel and fellow miners had spent hours supplying water and food to the three miners after hearing their shouts and tunneling small holes into the area where they were trapped.
Marco Tulio Artica, the head of the local fire department, said work to find the remaining miners is slow and hard.
Workers have to use picks, shovels, and small pneumatic drills instead of heavy machinery because of the risk of further collapses.
“We still don’t know anything about the other eight miners who are in other tunnels,” Artica said.
More than 100 police, firefighters, rescue workers and miners were working during the third day of rescue efforts following Wednesday’s cave-in.
The miners were trapped about 90 yards (80 meters) into the mine. It collapsed shortly after 22 miners entered, but half were able to get out on their own. (AGENCIES)

Bhagawaan Gopinathji

Tej Krishen Raina
gopi nathJagadguru Bhagawaan Gopinathji was one among the most eminent Saints that have ever graced the sacred land of India. Unlike the other Saints, he was called Bhagawaanji and recognized as such in his life-time as all the six attributes which that word stands for were prominently seen in him. He was a Jeewan-mukta, having attained mukti or liberation while still in the gross body, to which he was not attached in the least. HIS spiritual state was what the Shaivites call Shaambhavi avastha (the state of Shiva Himself) and the Vedantins, Brahmisthiti (the state of ever dwelling in Brahman, or God without form).
With his spiritual prowess, he did a lot of good to many spiritual aspirants, house-holders and to the country at large. He brought many sinners round to the path of virtue. Though essentially detached, he showed much concern for the country and its people as a spiritual icon. Bhagawaanji also exercised a beneficent influence on the modern age and the prevailing concepts.
Gopinathji, one among several brothers and sisters, was born in a middle class Kashmiri Pandit family at Banamohalla, Srinagar, Kashmir on 3rd July, 1898. His mother, Shrimati Haara Maali, passed away when he was only twelve and his father, Pandit Narayan Joo Bhan, breathed his last when he (Bhagawaanji) was in his late twenties.
Gopinathji was educated upto the Middle standard, however, he was well conversant with Urdu, Hindi, Persian and Sanskrit languages besides English.
The family into which he was born, being in dire financial straits, he was asked to take up some work; so, at the young age of fifteen or sixteen, he started working at a local Printing Press as a compositor – a job he performed competently. However, he gave up the job after about three years. In his twenties, he ran a grocer’s shop, at which he was noticed generally absent-minded, being inwardly absorbed in meditation. HIS elders in the family pressed him to marry, hoping that marriage would bind him to the world, and so he would be a permanent financial support but he was adamant in his refusal to shape into a house holder. Bhagawaanji started with the spiritual discipline known as Panchaanga-Upaasanaa, involving meditation on the five deities – Ganesha, Surya, Naarayana, Shiva and Shakti. Later, his target was the Divine Mother Shaarika, whose vision he had for the first time, at the age of Twenty Seven. Gradually, he shifted to nirguna upaasana, that is, meditating on the Supreme Reality without a form. In his early thirties, he took to intense Saadhana (spiritual discipline). Shutting himself up in a room, which no one except mostly a niece of his, was free to enter, an earthenware lamp was kept burning there all the twenty four hours and the Bhagawaan did not allow any intrusion or the room to be even swept. His concentration was so intense and he grew so oblivious of his body that a rat nibbled a hole in one of his heels. During this seven-year period of Saadhanaa, he would take no food for long intervals — extending even to six months, sometimes. Bhagawaanji helped two girl-devotees, separately, to have a darshana (vision) of the Divine Mother of the Universe. A third was helped to have an illuminative experience – a darshana of the Mother in the form of dazzling effulgence matching that of several suns. He did not initiate a disciple directly by word of mouth as tradition demands. He did so by a mere glance, by giving the devotee a little bhasama or prashad, or in the case of a male devotee, offering him puff from his chillum.  He felt happy when particularly a celebate came to see him though he never asked a house holder disciple or devotee to give up his wife and children in pursuit of self-realization.
Bhagawaanji was far above any consideration of caste, creed or nationality. From 1947 onwards, people of all creeds would come to see him and he would shower his love and compassion equally on all. Once he said, in answer to a devotee’s question, “is a Hindu one and a Muslim another?” Among his disciples and devotees today are many who never met him in his life time. These are spread over in other countries like Australia, the USA, Canada, Switzerland and the UK. Globally famous, he has come to be called a Jagadguru, a world spiritual teacher. During his earthly sojourn and even after abandoning the mortal coil the Bhagawaan cared for his devotees in and outside Kashmir and India. While sitting in his room when alive or having left his physical frame, he was seen at warfronts guiding and directing our troops in the years 1948, 1962, 1965, 1971 and 1999. Bhagawaanji was Tatvajnani (one who has all the knowledge about the elements of Nature). By a special type of saadhanaa, he had gained control over all the elements. During a pilgrimage to the holy cave of Amarnath, he brought rain to a vast drought-hit area. On some occasions, he stopped rain when it was likely to cause sufferings or death. He was able, with his control over the elements, to know which organ of a person’s body was diseased. He could cure a person with a mere look or by offering the Bhasam from his Dhoni; “he cured dreaded diseases like cancer, epilepsy, and other physical ailments of the supplicating devotees.”
He would often urge the devotees to lift the veil of ego that envelops the Atman. He observed vehemently: AHANKAARAS NAMASKAR, SUIGAV OMKAR – TAMISAATI BANI SAAKSHATKAAR, which conveys, ‘Bid good bye to the ego and be face to face with Truth’ (implying the attainment of God Realization).
Almost on every Sunday, musicians singing till late in the night, the Bhagawaan would never ask them to stop. But on his last Sunday on earth, 26th May, 1968 he directed the musicians to stop, remarking, “we shall not listen to any more music”. Then came May 28th, 1968 Tuesday, the day Bhagawaan Gopinathji finally chose to cast off his Bhautik Sareera. At about 3 p.m. he had the last few puffs at his chillum. A devotee started making tea but Bhagawaanji said, “we shall not take tea any more”. He asked for water at 5:30 p.m. and at 5:45 p.m. he uttered Om Namah Shivaya in a low voice, looked around with infinite love towards those present and closed his eyes.
After Bhagawaanji attained Nirvana, his disciples built an Ashram at Kharyar, Srinagar where his marble statue was installed in 1973. This Ashram has become a centre for the spiritual upliftment of his devotees. After the mass exodus of the Pandits from the Valley, other Bhagawaanji ashrams came up at Udaiwala Road, Bohri, Jammu and at Pamposh Enclave, New Delhi. At these ashrams all activities that were regularly performed in Srinagar Ashram are being performed regularly. The number of devotees participating in all such activities is going up day by day. Bhagawaanji Trust has expanded the activities of all these Ashrams over and above the infrastructure. With the ever increasing number of devotees across the globe, Ashrams, meditation Centres and Satsang Mandals at Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Australia, Switzerland have been rapidly coming up.
In all these ashrams and centres disseminate Bhagawaanji’s gospels of spirituality and universal brotherhood, with great zeal and enthusiasm.
In recognition of his spiritual stature as an extra-ordinary Saint, the Govt. of India issued a commemorative postal stamp on Him in 1998 – his birth centenary year.

Willpower completes the task

Lt Col RK Langar

Various factors contribute towards completion of any task which we undertake. Out of these one factor which is common and most important for completion of our task or our duty is our own will power. Will power is defined as a positive and creative function of mind which impels, propels and enables a person to complete a chosen moral task despite all obstacles coming his way. Will power simply means ‘I will do it’. Will power can also be defined as our capability to avoid an amoral act however tempting it may be. Our problem of life is our inability to do things which are right and at the same time our inability to resist from things which are wrong. This is an aspect of an ordinary human nature which slides down easily because to raise oneself to perform a moral act requires through understanding and self effort. Some time we perform wrong acts on the plea that whole society is doing so. Such a tendency is due to our weak will power due to which we easily get influenced by the will of the majority. We forget that to accept that majority is always right is a wrong belief. Obedience of social laws and our code of conduct should be perfect for developing our will power.
Will power should be taken to mean that we are internally strong and complete from inside and are in a position to negotiate successfully all difficulties that we may face for completing the task in hand. This also means we are self disciplined with a strong self control. We trust and respect our selves to complete a righteous action. Will power is also comparable with a strong determination and ‘I will do it’ attitude. We also understand that the task we are undertaking is for the well being of all including ourselves. Man is an image of God as our soul or Atma is a fraction of God. By virtue of this we possess within ourselves God’s all accomplishing power of will which we have to discover within ourselves by practicing yoga and by studying scriptures specially Bhagavad Gita. Then we realize that our will power is directly related to our spiritual strength. Will power is also related to our intellect or pure thought process. Our intellect which gives us discriminating ability is a divine gift to human beings which should control our mind and outgoing senses to act wisely.
Our will and Gods will
As we grow spiritually or as we raise our level of consciousness to a higher level we realize that though we have a free will power but we should never proclaim that ‘ I am the doer’ even though we say ‘ I will do it’. When our intellect is guided by spiritual wisdom, then we can attune our will to divine will. The power in us is God’s power and we must coincide our will to God’s will. A spiritually elevate person knows that even he has a free will to do what he wants to do, he must merge his will to God’s will. His belief system would be ‘Thy will be done not mine’. But what exactly is God’s will. To know what’s God will is the secret of Divine life. In simple words God’s will is that every human being must adhere to righteousness and truthfulness in all his undertaking in thoughts, and deeds. Whenever we are in doubt as to what should be done and what should not be done or what is a moral act or what is an immoral act we should listen to Lord Krishna’s advice which He gave to Arjuna in Bhagavad Gita. Lord Krishna says in the Gita that let scriptures be the authority in ascertaining what ought to be done and what ought not to be done. By following this advice of Lord Krishna we become an instrument in God’s hand s and get rid of our false ego. We then work for the welfare of human kind as copartners of God.
How to develop will power
A person can develop his will power in the following manner. His mind and intellect should be one pointed while performing his task so that he fully concentrates on the work in hand. He should develop a stable and balanced mind to enable him to face any adversity that may arise. He should conserve his energy by abstaining from unproductive pursuits and by avoiding evil tendencies. He should direct his good will even to those who are not good to him. This could be attained by practicing higher values of life which would make his inside beautiful and perfect which would not disturbed by outer conditions. He should let go all negativity from within. He should accept people and outer conditions are they are since he has no power either to change any person or outer conditions. He should never complain against outer conditions, since by doing so he would be wasting his time and energy. He should realize that the world is a relative place where every situation has some limitations. He should attain flexibility which allows him to work under undesirable or unfavorable conditions without disturbing his inner poise and equilibrium. Thus we see that man can develop his will power by working in the right direction. Such a person would be an asset to the society.
Conclusion
We must understand that by virtue of inner self being a fraction of God(which is our soul or Atma), the power that we have in us in God’s power which should not be wasted in useless activities. It is God’s will that we should use this power righteously without worrying about the future or regretting about the past. Both these tendencies waste our energy and we weaken our will power. We should always stay in the present and perform our duties keeping in view that our work should be beneficial for all. This is the correct use of our will power.
