Israel to receive first batch new KC-46 Pegasus Boeing tanker craft

JURESALEM, May 4: Israel is set to receive the first batch of its new Boeing KC-46 Pegasus tanker aircraft within weeks, marking a significant step in expanding its long-range strike capabilities.

According to Israel’s Defence Ministry, the aircraft has already completed its maiden test flight in the United States and is expected to be delivered in about a month. It is the first of at least six tankers ordered as part of a broader military modernisation programme.

The arrival of the KC-46 – known in Israel as “Gideon” – is expected to transform how the Israeli Air Force operates over long distances. With targets such as Iran and Yemen sitting 1,500 – 2,000km away, aerial refuelling has long been a limiting factor.

Until now, Israel has had refuelling capability, but only on a relatively small scale. That has meant tighter mission windows, fewer target options and less flexibility if something goes wrong mid-operation.

The new aircraft changes that calculation. It will allow Israeli jets – including F-35s, F-15s and F-16s – to stay airborne longer, strike deeper and operate with greater independence, even without direct US support.

That independence has been a key concern for Israeli planners. While recent operations against Iran involved some level of American backing, officials have long assumed that future administrations in Washington may be less willing to assist – or could even oppose such strikes.

The KC-46, with a range of up to 16 hours of flight time – extendable to 24 hours with additional refuelling – offers a way around those constraints. Its modern avionics and glass cockpit also give pilots improved situational awareness during complex missions.

Beyond combat roles, the aircraft brings added versatility. It can carry around 110 personnel, support medical evacuation missions and operate as a multi-role transport platform, equipped with onboard facilities including a kitchen and medical support systems.

The tanker acquisition forms part of a wider defence build-up worth hundreds of billions of shekels over the coming decade, which also includes additional fighter jets and upgraded strike capabilities.

India’s LPG consumption slides 16 pc in April amid West Asia conflict

NEW DELHI, May 4 : India’s cooking gas LPG consumption fell by a steep 16 per cent in April as supply disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict hit availability for both household kitchens and commercial users, according to latest official data.

LPG consumption stood at 2.2 million tonnes in April, 16.16 per cent lower than 2.62 million tonnes consumed in the same period last year. The consumption was 10.5 per cent lower than the 2.45 million tonnes of LPG sales in April 2024.

It was also down month-on-month, lower than the 2.379 million tonnes of consumption in March, according to data from the Oil Ministry’s Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC).

India imports about 60 per cent of its LPG requirements, much of it via the Strait of Hormuz, which was effectively shut following US and Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliation. With supplies from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates disrupted, the government cut LPG supplies to commercial establishments like hotels and industries to safeguard household cooking gas availability.

Also, supplies to households were regulated by increasing the gap between two refills.

According to PPAC, the decline in LPG consumption in April was lower than the 12.8 per cent year-on-year fall in March.

LPG consumption had grown at a steady pace in recent years, driven by government efforts to replace firewood and other polluting fuels with cleaner alternatives.

With the war leading to airspace closure in many Gulf countries and suspension of flights, jet fuel or ATF consumption fell 1.37 per cent to 761,000 tonnes in April when compared to the previous year. It was also down month-on-month from 807,000 tonnes of sales in March.

Other than the two war-impacted fuels, diesel sales also moderated with just a 0.25 per cent rise to 8.282 million tonnes. In March, diesel sales had risen 8.1 per cent to 8.727 million tonnes.

Petrol sales were up 6.36 per cent to 3.67 million tonnes in April. The growth was lower than the 7.6 per cent rise in March to 3.78 million tonnes.

Consumption of diesel was 4.5 per cent higher than 7.925 million tonnes in April 2024. Petrol sales were 11.7 per cent higher than 3.825 million tonnes in April 2024. (PTI)

People defeated ‘divisive forces’, ‘anti-Hindu agenda’ in assembly polls: BJP chief Nitin Nabin

NEW DELHI, May 4 : BJP president Nitin Nabin on Monday hailed NDA’s performance in the assembly polls as “historic” and asserted that the opposition INDIA bloc will now “crumble like a pack of cards”, blaming Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for the electoral reverses of the DMK and the TMC in the state elections.

Addressing an event organised at the BJP headquarters here to celebrate the party’s stunning performance in West Bengal and the NDA’s success in Assam and Puducherry, Nabin said that the results of the elections reflect people’s continued faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

People have defeated the “divisive forces” and their “anti-Hindu agenda” by giving their mandate to the BJP and its allies in the polls, he added.

“People have given historic support to the BJP in the elections,” Nabin said.

While the counting of votes was still underway, the trends indicated that the BJP was poised to record a landslide victory in West Bengal, inflicting a crushing defeat on the ruling TMC, and appeared to be returning to power in Assam and Puducherry with its coalition partners under the banner of National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

In Tamil Nadu, the DMK appeared to have lost in the elections with the ruling party winning just 44 seats and leading in 16 seats in the 234-member assembly, and the TVK merging as the single largest party winning 73 seats and leading in 33 seats around 8.30 pm.

The DMK’s ally Congress, which won just two seats till the filing of this report, was leading in three other seats. None of the parties including the AIADMK could reach the majority mark.

In an apparent reference to the losses that the TMC and the DMK suffered in the state elections, the BJP chief added, “This failure belongs to no one else but Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the INDI Alliance.”

“I assure you that after these poll results, the INDI alliance will crumble like a pack of cards,” he added.

In Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK won 30 seats and was leading in 17, while its ally, the BJP ended up winning just one seat.

Kerala witnessed a sharp political reset as the state electors voted out the last Left government in the country, bringing back the Congress to the ruling saddle after a gap of 10 years, while the BJP broke through a long-standing electoral drought by winning three seats.

The BJP, which has long struggled to secure a political foothold in a state traditionally witnessing a bipolar contest between the LDF and UDF, made significant gains in the assembly elections by winning three seats. (PTI)

Sri Lanka, Maldives exchange 7 MoUs during President Muizzu’s visit

COLOMBO, May 4 : Maldives and Sri Lanka on Monday exchanged 7 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering various sectors, including tourism and defence, during the ongoing visit of  President Mohamed Muizzu to the island nation.

The MOUs were exchanged after bilateral talks between Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and President Muizzu, Maldivian web portal Sun reported.

Archiving, Training and Professional Development for Teachers, Sports and Youth development are the other sectors in which the two countries have decided to cooperate.

Muizzu’s visit marks the 60th year of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Addressing the joint press conference, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said, “Sri Lanka recognises the Maldives as an important economic partner in the region, and we are keen to further expand this partnership”.

President Muizzu said that his visit marks not only a reaffirmation of close neighbourly ties, but also the beginning of “a renewed and forward-looking partnership” between the two countries, Sun reported.

The Maldivian leader also planted a sapling at the Viharamahadevi Park here to mark the 60th year of diplomatic relations.

Muizzu is on a four-day state visit to the Island nation at the invitation of President Dissanayake. He is accompanied by cabinet ministers and top government officials, the report said. (PTI)

Nepal renews territorial claim over Lipulekh, seeks dialogue with India

KATHMANDU, May 4 : Nepal on Monday renewed its territorial claim over Lipulekh while advocating dialogue with India to resolve the issue, a day after New Delhi firmly dismissed Kathmandu’s stance on the region.

India on Sunday firmly rejected Nepal’s objection to the upcoming Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via the long-established Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, dismissing Kathmandu’s territorial claims over the region as an “unilateral artificial enlargement” that New Delhi finds “untenable”.

New Delhi’s sharp reaction came hours after the Nepal foreign ministry issued a statement, objecting to preparations by India and China for the annual pilgrimage via Lipulekh Pass, claiming the region belongs to it.

“Nepal doesn’t intend to enlarge its boundary; the territory belongs to Nepal, nd the government has a clear view about this and is committed to its stance,” the Nepal government spokesperson, Sasmit Pokharel, said while talking to the media.

“The issue needs to be resolved through collaboration and diplomatic dialogue between the two countries,” said Pokharel, who is also the Minister for Education, Science and Technology.

He said that the Foreign Ministry has already notified India regarding the matter through a formal letter.

The pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region holds religious significance for Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists.

The yatra resumed last year after a gap of nearly five years as part of efforts to normalise relations between India and China.

On April 30, the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi announced that the annual Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is set to take place from June to August this year via two routes — Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and Nathu La in Sikkim. (PTI)

Excelsior Correspondent
Srinagar, May 4: An ambulance carrying a critically ill patient was left stranded for several minutes outside Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla today after severe traffic congestion blocked the hospital’s approach road.
Eyewitnesses said the ambulance, despite loud sirens, struggled to navigate the narrow stretch due to vehicles parked on both sides of the road and multiple roadside encroachments.
Local residents said the situation is worsened by vendors occupying parts of the carriageway, while encroachments on pedestrian pathways force people onto the road, further narrowing the available space and compounding congestion.
They said the incident also highlighted chronic traffic mismanagement outside the hospital, where the already constricted road is routinely clogged by indiscriminate parking and unattended vehicles.
Residents also alleged the absence of traffic personnel at the site despite heavy daily movement and the critical nature of the location.
“This is not an ordinary road; it is directly linked to saving lives. Even a delay of a few minutes can prove critical,” said a hospital attendant.
Over time, locals said, the approach road to GMC Baramulla has been extensively encroached upon by commercial establishments, as the area has steadily evolved into a busy commercial hub.
Notably, the hospital area witnesses a daily footfall of around 10,000 to 15,000 people.
Residents said the recurring congestion is not only inconveniencing visitors but also posing a serious risk to patients requiring urgent medical attention.

Supervision must look beyond formal compliance, says RBI Deputy Guv

NEW DELHI, May 4 : A lightly supervised system may appear efficient for some time, because of lower costs and faster growth, but if that growth rests on weak governance, poor credit standards or hidden risks, the eventual cost is also borne by depositors as well as the wider economy, according to RBI Deputy Governor Swaminathan J.

Emphasising the importance of supervision, he said that institutions and firms cannot be understood only through reported numbers.

“… supervision must look beyond formal compliance. Compliance asks whether the rule has been followed. Supervision asks whether the underlying risk has been understood and addressed,” he said in a recent lecture.

While noting that institutions and firms cannot be understood only through reported numbers, Swaminathan said that numbers tell a story, but one must learn to ask what lies behind them.

“The audited balance sheet and information memorandum are useful, but they are not the business. The business is in the factory, on the shop floor, in the market, in the supply chain, in the quality of management, and in the decisions taken. The banker’s job is therefore not to be cynical, but to be curious,” he said.

Swaminathan delivered the 12th G Ramachandran Memorial Lecture at the Madras School of Economics in Chennai on the topic ‘Learning, Judgement and Public Purpose – Lessons from Banking’ on April 30.

The lecture was uploaded on the RBI website on Monday.

“A lightly supervised system may appear efficient for some time, because the costs are lower and growth may be faster. But if that growth rests on weak governance, poor credit standards or hidden risks, the eventual cost is borne not only by shareholders or management, but by depositors, borrowers, taxpayers and the wider economy.

“The true value of supervision lies in reducing the probability and severity of such outcomes,” the RBI Deputy Governor said.

Addressing the students, he also mentioned that banking is becoming more digital, more data-driven and more interconnected.

Credit can now be originated through platforms. Payments move instantly. Algorithms may influence lending decisions. Non-bank entities play a growing role in financial intermediation, he said.

While these changes bring enormous possibilities as they can widen access, reduce costs and improve efficiency, Swaminathan said there are also new questions.

“Is the customer being treated fairly? Is the model understandable? Is accountability clear? Are risks being recognised early enough? These questions cannot be answered by technology alone. They require judgment. They require institutional discipline. They require humility about what we do not know. And above all, they require a sense of public purpose,” he said. (PTI)

NC not Cong lagged behind in struggle for statehood: Cong

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, May 4: Congress has said that it is National Conference that lagged behind in the struggle for restoration of Statehood, whereas, Congress has always remained on the forefront and on the streets for this demand, right from day one.
Reacting to the statement of NC president, Dr Farooq Abdullah in this regard, Congress has said that he is diverting attention of the people in view of great resentment over non fulfillment of the demand by the Centre and failure to build strong movement on the ground.
Congress Party and its leadership has played a front role all these years over the issue and intensified its struggle, especially after the Assembly elections and remained on the streets to press for the most important demand of Statehood of people of J&K.
People ask NC to explain what it did to achieve the legitimate demand as committed by the Centre but failed to fulfill it.
Working president of JKPCC, Raman Bhalla said that Congress didn’t join even the cabinet, which is the right of every pre- poll alliance partner, after attaining majority in elections. It was only to expose the BJP Government, which had committed to restore Statehood immediately after Assembly elections, but has not honoured the same.
Since then, the Congress Party intensified its struggle under the slogan “Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq” in many phases including chain hunger strike, Srinagar Chalo, Jammu Chalo and Delhi Chalo call , where our senior Central leadership, on the directions of top leadership joined our protest demonstration at Jantar Mantir and march to Parliament, giving nationwide attention to the most legitimate demand of people of J&K.
Even the top leadership of Congress Malikarjun Kharge and LOP Rahul Gandhi wrote open letter to the Prime Minister to honour his public commitments regarding grant of statehood.
Unfortunately, at that time too, our alliance partner NC raised questions over Congress struggle for Statehood, instead of extending support to our struggle.
Taking a dig on NC, he said Statehood can’t be achieved by showering praises on the Modi Government, which betrayed the people of J&K on restoration of Statehood.
