Sri Lanka, Maldives exchange 7 MoUs during President Muizzu’s visit

COLOMBO, May 4 : Maldives and Sri Lanka on Monday exchanged 7 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering various sectors, including tourism and defence, during the ongoing visit of  President Mohamed Muizzu to the island nation.

The MOUs were exchanged after bilateral talks between Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and President Muizzu, Maldivian web portal Sun reported.

Archiving, Training and Professional Development for Teachers, Sports and Youth development are the other sectors in which the two countries have decided to cooperate.

Muizzu’s visit marks the 60th year of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Addressing the joint press conference, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said, “Sri Lanka recognises the Maldives as an important economic partner in the region, and we are keen to further expand this partnership”.

President Muizzu said that his visit marks not only a reaffirmation of close neighbourly ties, but also the beginning of “a renewed and forward-looking partnership” between the two countries, Sun reported.

The Maldivian leader also planted a sapling at the Viharamahadevi Park here to mark the 60th year of diplomatic relations.

Muizzu is on a four-day state visit to the Island nation at the invitation of President Dissanayake. He is accompanied by cabinet ministers and top government officials, the report said. (PTI)
