LONDON : Although the genetic material of the novel coronavirus may still be detected in the respiratory or stool samples of COVID-19 patients for several weeks, no infectious virus particle was found beyond nine days of symptom onset, a new study says.
The research, published in The Lancet Microbe journal, noted that people with the SARS-CoV-2 virus infection are most likely to be highly infectious from symptom onset and the following five days.
“This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis that has comprehensively examined and compared viral load and shedding for these three human coronaviruses,” said study lead author Muge Cevik from the University of St Andrews in the UK.
“It provides a clear explanation for why SARS-CoV-2 spreads more efficiently than SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV and is so much more difficult to contain,” Cevik said.
According to the researchers, majority of viral transmission events occur very early, and especially within the first five days after symptom onset, indicating the importance of self-isolation immediately after symptoms start.
“We also need to raise public awareness about the range of symptoms linked with the disease, including mild symptoms that may occur earlier on in the course of the infection than those that are more prominent like cough or fever,” Cevik said.
In the research, the scientists specifically looked at people infected with SARS-CoV-2 and mainly those who were hospitalised.
They said the results are only relevant for the period of self-isolation for people with confirmed COVID-19, and do not apply to people quarantining who may or may not have been exposed after contact with someone infected.
With many countries currently recommending that people with a SARS-CoV-2 infection should self-isolate for 10 days, the scientists said this is in line with their findings.
They assessed key factors involved in the period of infectiousness of COVID-19 patients such as viral load, the length of time someone sheds viral genetic material (RNA) of the pathogen, and isolation of the live virus.
In their analysis, the researchers included 98 studies that had five or more participants, cohort studies and randomised controlled trials — 79 focussed on SARS-CoV-2, 73 of which included hospitalised patients only — eight on the 2002-03 SARS pandemic virus, and 11 on the MERS coronavirus infection.
From these studies, the scientists calculated the average length of viral RNA shedding and examined the changes in viral load and the success of isolating the live virus from different samples collected throughout an infection.
The findings revealed that the average length of time of viral RNA shedding into the upper respiratory tract, lower respiratory tract, stool and serum were 17 days, 14.6 days, 17.2 days and 16.6 days, respectively.
“These findings suggest that in clinical practice, repeat PCR testing may not be needed to deem that a patient is no longer infectious, as this could remain positive for much longer and does not necessarily indicate they could pass on the virus to others,” Cevik said.
“In patients with non-severe symptoms, their period of infectiousness could instead be counted as 10 days from symptom onset,” he added.
The study noted that the highest viral load of SARS-CoV-2 RNA were detected early in the course of the disease — at the time symptoms begin, or before day five of symptoms.
Asymptomatic infection may clear the virus faster, the researchers said, suggesting that those without symptoms may be as infectious as those with symptoms at the beginning of infection, but may remain so for a shorter period.
However, Cevik added that there are limited data available on the shedding of infectious virus in asymptomatic individuals to inform any policy change on quarantine duration in the absence of testing.
Citing the limitations of the research, the scientists said many of the patients across the different studies included in the analysis were hospitalised and received a range of treatments that may affect the course of their infection.
They said the studies included different populations who were followed up and managed differently.
The period of infectiousness may also not exactly align with the successful culturing of the live virus from samples, although these are likely to broadly overlap, the scientists added.
“The majority of studies included in our review were performed in patients who were admitted to hospital. Therefore, our findings may not apply to people with milder infection although these results suggest those with milder cases may clear the virus faster from their body,” said study senior author Antonia Ho of MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research in the UK. Modi, Bhutanese PM jointly launch RuPay card Phase-II
NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his Bhutanese counterpart Lotay Tshering on Friday launched RuPay card Phase-II that will allow Bhutanese card holders to access the RuPay network in India.
The prime ministers of the two countries had jointly launched Phase-I of the project during Modi’s state visit to Bhutan in August last year.
In his speech via video conferencing, Modi spoke about the deep cooperating between the countries in a gamut of fields, including ISRO’s preparation to launch Bhutanese satellites into space and BSNL’s agreement with Bhutan regarding third international internet gateway.
He also asserted that India stands solidly with Bhutan in this difficult hour of the COVID-19 pandemic, and said meeting the neighbouring country’s requirements will always be its top priority.
The implementation of Phase-I of RuPay cards in Bhutan has enabled visitors from India to access ATMs and Point of Sale (PoS) terminals across Bhutan. Phase-II will now allow Bhutanese card holders to access RuPay network in India, the Ministry of External Affairs had said in a statement.
The RuPay card is an Indian debit and credit card payment network, with acceptance at ATMs, POS devices and e-commerce websites.
India and Bhutan share a special partnership, anchored in mutual understanding and respect, reinforced by a shared cultural heritage and strong people to people links, the MEA had said. (AGENCIES)

Delhi records coldest November morning in at least 14 years
NEW DELHI : The national capital recorded a minimum of 7.5 degrees Celsius on Friday, the lowest minimum temperature in November in at least 14 years, according to India Meteorological Department data.
The city also witnessed cold wave conditions, as the minimum temperature was less than 10 degrees Celsius and five notches below normal, according to Mahesh Palawat, an expert at Skymet Weather, a private forecasting agency.
For the plains, the IMD declares a cold wave when the minimum temperature is 10 degrees Celsius or below and is 4.5 notches less than normal for two consecutive days.
According to the weather department, 7.4 degrees Celsius is Delhi’s lowest minimum temperature in the month of November in at least 14 years.
Delhi had recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 11.5 degrees Celsius last year, 10.5 degrees Celsius in 2018 and 7.6 degrees Celsius in 2017 in the month of November.
The all-time record for the lowest minimum temperature in November is 3.9 degrees Celsius recorded on November 28, 1938.
Palawat said cold winds blowing from snow-laden western Himalayas have led to a dip in the mercury and a similar situation will continue till Saturday.
A fresh Western Disturbance is approaching northwest India on November 23. It is likely to increase the minimum temperature by a few notches, he said.
The minimum temperature this month, barring on November 16, has remained 2-3 degree Celsius below normal in the absence of a cloud cover, according to IMD officials.
Clouds trap some of the outgoing infrared radiation and radiate it back downward, warming the ground.
On Thursday, the city recorded a minimum of 9.4 degrees Ceslius. (AGENCIES)
Mughal road closed due to snow, no traffic on Kashmir highway for maintenance
SRINAGAR : Traffic on 86-km-long historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, has been suspended on Friday due to fresh snowfall and slippery road condition.
Meanwhile, about 20 persons, including a child, who were struck at Pir-ki-Gali due to snowfall and slippery road condition on the Mughal road, were rescued and taken to safer place on Thursday night.
The 270-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway has been closed to allow agencies to undertake repair and maintenance work on the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, a traffic police official said today.
He said there were few inches of fresh snowfall on the road at several places, including Pir-ki-Gali , Dubjan and Zaznar, last evening forcing authorities to suspend traffic as a precautionary measure since there was slippery road condition. The weather has witnessed improvement this morning and traffic will be resumed only after getting green signal, he said.
Meanwhile, a massive rescue operation was launched when a report was received that about 20 persons were struck at Pir-ki-Gali due to snowfall and slippery road condition. All the stranded persons, including a child, were rescued and taken to safer place.
Spokesman said traffic on 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway will remain suspended today in view of maintenance of the road. The authorities have announced to allow National Highway Authorities of India (NHAI) to undertake necessary repair and maintenance work of the highway on every Friday till November end. Even security force vehicles were not being allowed to ply on Friday, he said. (agencies)

According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 12,95,91,786 samples have been tested up to November 20 with 10,83,397 samples being tested on Thursday.
India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5. It went past 50 lakh on September 16, 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11 and crossed 80 lakh on October 29.
The 584 new fatalities include 154 from Maharashtra, 98 from Delhi, 53 from West Bengal, 39 from Uttar Pradesh, 26 each from Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka, 20 from Haryana, 19 from Tamil Nadu and 15 from Punjab.

How can technical issues which are the exclusive domain of professionals and experts be manned by non-professionals is hard to comprehend and that also in a scenario where an organisation like Forensic Science Laboratory is sought to be re-organised and improvement in functioning strived for. Such a stance is not only contradictory but bound to boomerang into utter non-performance and idling of the infrastructure of whatever nature provided. . It is strange and totally unjustified that the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratory , Jammu and Kashmir is to engage Masters of the School Education Department for running the laboratory and manning key positions . Had such a practice been in vogue anywhere in the country and produced some positive gains and results , it could have been inferred that such an arrangement could have been given a trial in the twin Laboratories in Jammu and Kashmir too. How can the cockpit of a plane be efficiently manned by a train driver without proper training and expertise, holds good in the instant case .
Like this, either the importance or the critical role played by the Forensic Laboratory is underestimated or thought of being purely of fiduciary nature and ignoring the contribution coming from the Laboratory in helping and supporting criminal justice system by solving and unfolding vital clues of crime to help prosecution in getting the culprits convicted.Through a recent advertisement , the Directorate has invited applications from in-service Masters of the School Education Department for filling up 28 posts of Assistant Scientific Officers in both Jammu and Srinagar Labs on deputation basis for two years. Excepting saving on the cost of such engagement of the Masters as their lien shall continue to be with the parent department , there seems no justification for such a decision and when it was going to least benefit the working of the labs which are reeling under the shortage of staff , mainly technical and experts in the concerned fields and subjects. We also know that in the absence of the required technical staff , the working of the Labs is largely affected and curiously, there are no experts posted in these labs who are qualified in handling issues like ballistics explosives, finger prints etc.The situation was going to be virtually unmanageable with whatever number of experts available presently attaining superannuation in the coming months. If to meet that eventuality , Masters are decided to be appointed, the fate of the Labs can well be imagined. On the contrary, how things and solutions do appear on papers and in files only but not be implemented can be seen by the decision of the Government taken last year in October when not only reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir Forensic Science Laboratory was approved but a decision to creation of additional 88 posts of different categories too was taken to tide over the manpower shortage which was nothing less than a big hindrance in the satisfactory performance of the Labs . Jammu and Kashmir being a sensitive and border UT of the country where crimes especially sponsored from across the border are not only having been taking place intermittently but the extent and the variety thereof too being such where the role of the Forensic Laboratory was of vital nature.
It is no prudence on the part of the Government nor in the interests of criminal justice system to let the role of Forensic Science Laboratory be relegated to that of a ruse if not to the background in absolute terms and it is surprising that the decision taken last year in October is not implemented and applications not invited from the eligible candidates for the 88 posts already sanctioned and instead some adhoc arrangements are sought to be made and that too of those who do not know how to handle the most critical and specialised field which the Forensic Laboratory is supposed to deal in . Looking to all these facts of the matter, the UT Government should take a suitable decision and accordingly plan to properly reorganise, revamp and rejuvenate Forensic Science Laboratory in Jammu and Srinagar.
Tainted Netas get a reprieve from SC
Even though as per an estimate, nearly 30 per cent of present law makers have criminal cases pending against them or are involved in one or the other way in offences of various hues , a petition filed in the Supreme Court to bar such political leaders to seek election and get elected to legislatures and the Parliament to be not allowed, has been opined by the court to be dealt with by the Parliament alone . The Parliament was the authority to take a call on the issue was what the court observed. The court also refused to declare ”null and void” the elections of the MLAs and MPs charge-sheeted for over a year for offences punishable with a term of 5 years or more.
The question, however, is that can such a maturity and quest for a clean and neat public life and image be aspired for by the law makers in the Parliament that they, irrespective of party affiliations agree to enact a law to cleanse the system and thus create an image of their probity and transparency and high integrity in the eyes of the public. The possibility of this happening appears to be remote means that the position was going to remain as it is which is quite unfortunate unless people on their own, choose and elect only the honest and clean imaged candidates to such august platforms of our Parliamentary democracy.
6 children among 14 of wedding party killed in road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh
New Delhi : At least 14 persons, including six children, were killed in a road accident after the vehicle they were travelling in rammed into a truck on the Prayagraj-Lucknow highway late Thursday night.
The accident took place on the Prayagraj-Lucknow highway that falls under the jurisdiction of Manikpur police station. All 14 occupants of the Bolera car were reportedly part of a marriage party and were returning from Sheikhpur village in Nababganj.
Following the information of the accident, police reached the spot and used a gas cutter to separate the mangled remains of the car from the truck. As per reports, it took almost two hours for the police to take out bodies
Major terror attack ahead of DDC polls foiled: 4 JeM militants from Pak killed

After infiltration, ultras were heading to Valley in rice-laden truck
Huge arms haul: 11 rifles, 3 pistols, 29 grenades recovered
NIA team visits Nagrota, several Pak-made medicines seized
Sanjeev Pargal
JAMMU, Nov 19: Police and CRPF today averted major terror attack by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militants aimed at disrupting the ongoing first-ever District Development Council (DDC) elections by killing four militants, believed to be Pakistanis, in a pre-dawn encounter at Ban Toll Plaza in Nagrota area on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which was second at almost the same spot this year and fourth between Nagrota-Jhajjar Kotli during last four years.
The modus operandi used by militants for reaching Kashmir from Jammu after successfully infiltrating from the International Border was almost same in the last three gun battles at Jhajjar Kotli and Ban Toll Plaza. However, there have been reports that many militants had managed to reach South Kashmir unchecked on the National Highway which had been confirmed by the truck operators, who were caught at Jhajjar Kotli and Ban Toll Plaza during previous encounters. Click here to watch video
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mukesh Singh told reporters along with IG CRPF Jammu PS Ranpise that joint team of police and CRPF signaled a truck to stop at Ban Toll Plaza as Jammu Police had very specific inputs that the militants were trying to infiltrate to disrupt the DDC elections. The truck driver jumped out and fled away. Police and CRPF personnel surrounded the truck and they were soon joined by the Army teams from Nagrota and the SOG Jammu.
The IGP Jammu made an announcement from loud speaker urging the militants to come out of the truck and surrender but they opened heavy firing and lobbed grenades on security personnel, who retaliated effectively. After heavy exchange of firing with encounter extending up to three hours, the security personnel killed all four militants and the truck caught fire. The truck No. JK01AL 1055 was extensively damaged.
Two police personnel were injured in the militant firing. They have been identified as Mohammad Ishaq Malik and Kuldeep Raj. They have been admitted in the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and were responding to the treatment.
Besides the IGP Jammu, DIG Jammu Vivek Gupta, SSP Jammu Sridhar Patil, SP Operations Naresh Singh and Additional SP Jammu Sanjay Sharma reached the spot. Senior officers of Army and CRPF also visited the spot. Sources said the operation was meticulously executed which was evident from the fact that only two police personnel sustained minor injuries in the terror attack though the militants opened heavy volume of firing on them with assault rifles and lobbed many grenades.
There was no official confirmation as from which area the militants infiltrated and were picked up by the truck driver but, according to reliable inputs, the militants had crossed the International Border between Samba and Kathua and were on their way to Kashmir in the truck, whose operator was already waiting there to pick up them. The truck was loaded with rice bags and belonged to Kashmir. The militants had to reach the Valley.
While the CCTV footage of the National Highway from Kathua to Nagrota is under examination, sources said the truck had crossed Thandi Khui around 3.45 am and reached Nagrota at about 5.20 am. The militants had hidden themselves in specially created cavity between rice bags in the truck.
Identity of the militants hasn’t been established but they were believed to be Jaish-e-Mohammed activists and most likely their nationality was Pakistan. They were wearing normal dresses.
This is, however, for the first time that four militants were carrying 11 AK rifles with them, which have been recovered by police along with three pistols, 28 live grenades, six UBGL grenades, 7.5 grams RDX, three wireless sets, 24 AK magazines, three pistol magazines, one bundle of liquid explosive, five battery remotes, one RDX remover timer, 10 pencil cells, mobile telephones, compass, two watches, pithoo bags, four pouches, seven blankets, seven chocolates, one cutter and some clothes.
A number of medicines, injections and syringes have also been seized from the possession of militants which were made in Karachi, Kasur and other cities of Pakistan indicating clearly that the slain militants were Pakistanis and had infiltrated from across the border for causing large scale disturbances during the District Development Council elections. Seized medicines include Dicloran, Panadol, Paracetamol, Flagyl, Metronidazol etc. Some of them bear names of manufacturers as Sanofi-Aventis Pakistan Limited Plot No. 23, Sector 22, Korangi, Industrial Area, Karachi, Lahore Medical Instruments Private Limited, 48-KM Ferozepur Road, Kasur, Pakistan, Telephone 049-2716118 and Qarskit Industries Private Limited, Plot No. 56/1-4, Phase-I & II Hattar, Industrial Estate, District Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan E No. 004140007.
Like previous encounters at Ban Toll Plaza and Nagrota, the militants managed to cross several police nakas after their infiltration between Samba and Hiranagar on their way to South Kashmir. While three such attempts in which the militants were heading to Kashmir in trucks after infiltration from the International Border have been detected, the truck operators and cleaners who were arrested after Jhajjar Kotli and Ban Toll Plaza attacks previously had admitted that they had transported many militants to Kashmir after picking up them between Samba and Hiranagar.
Meanwhile, the National Investigating Agency (NIA) sleuths also visited the site of terror attack at Ban Toll Plaza in Nagrota for on spot investigations. Generally, investigation in such terror attacks is handed over to the NIA by the Union Home Ministry. However, no official order has so far been issued of shifting the case to the NIA, which has been investigating number of such attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.
Reliable sources said the truck driver had already reached Jammu for picking up militants from designated spot on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway as per directions of Jaish-e-Mohammed cadre. He had loaded the truck with rice bags and was scheduled to drop the militants to South Kashmir. The militants had fitted themselves between the rice bags.
“Identity of the truck driver hasn’t been ascertained so far but the investigating teams have managed to get all details pertaining to truck owner and his whereabouts. Message has been flashed to Kashmir Police to nab him while efforts in Jammu were on to get the truck driver, whose arrest is very crucial as he could take the lid of the area where he picked up the militants, the Jaish commanders who had assigned him the task of transporting militants and the place where they had to be dropped,” sources said.
Investigators have also obtained CCTV footage of various locations on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway to ascertain movement of the truck.
Major attacks near Nagrota
This was the fourth major terror attack which was successfully thwarted by security forces between Nagrota and Jhajjar Kotli in Jammu district on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
On November 29, 2016, three militants had attacked Army establishment at Nagrota. In the gun battle, seven Army soldiers, two of them officers, were martyred while the troops had eliminated all three militants.
On September 13, 2018, three militants were trapped by police at Jhajjar Kotli when they were being transported in a truck from the International Border between Hiranagar and Samba to South Kashmir. They were killed after two-day-long encounter in which several security personnel including then SP Katra Naresh Singh, now SP Operations, then DySP Nagrota Mohan Sharma and then DySP Katra Vivek Shekhar among others were injured. Truck driver and cleaner, who were working as OGWs for the militants, were arrested.
On January 31, 2020, three militants were intercepted in a truck at Ban Toll Plaza in Nagrota and were eliminated by police and CRPF personnel. In this operation also, police had arrested driver and conductor of the truck.
In Nagrota and Jhajjar Kotli attacks in which two OGWs each were arrested, they had disclosed that they had already transported many militants from the International Border between Samba and Kathua to South Kashmir.
