Formation of this govt reaffirms strength of self-respect, social justice: Kharge after Vijay’s swearing-in as TN CM

NEW DELHI, May 10: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge congratulated C Joseph Vijay on being sworn-in as the Tamil Nadu chief minister on Sunday and said he is confident that under the TVK chief’s leadership, the ideals that have long defined the state’s political and social consciousness will continue to guide governance.
Vijay was sworn-in as the Tamil Nadu chief minister on Sunday in a colourful ceremony attended by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, ushering in the first non-DMK, non-AIADMK government in the southern state in 60 years.
“On the swearing-in of Thiru TVK Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to him, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party and the entire progressive alliance,” Kharge said on X.
The formation of this government reaffirms the enduring strength of selfrespect, social justice, empowerment and rational thought, are values that have
long defined Tamil Nadu’s political and social consciousness, he said, adding this is the legacy shaped by Periyar and Kamrajar. “Millions of people across Tamil Nadu, especially the aspirational youth, have placed their trust in the TVK. I am confident that under his leadership, these ideals will continue to guide governance and inspire the nation,” Kharge said.
“Wishing the new government great success in serving the people with compassion, inclusivity, and commitment,” the Congress chief said.
Vijay’s cabinet was a mix of young and experienced, with the TVK chief’s core team finding place in the maiden ministry of the 51 year-old actor-turnedpolitician. In his first address, Vijay said he was not from any royal lineage and that people welcomed and accepted him.
He also said that he will not deceive people with false promises. Vijay’s parents S A Chandrasekhar and Shobha, top actor Trisha and a whole lot of dignitaries attended the ceremony at the sprawling Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.
The TVK founder-chief was appointed as chief minister on Saturday by the governor after his party clinched key support to cross the magic 118 majority mark in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, ending days of uncertainty over government formation in the southern state.
Capping days of hectic parleying to shore up numbers to usher in the first nonDMK, non-AIADMK government in nearly 70 years, Vijay finally managed to secure the support of four MLAs of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Saturday. The Congress had pledged support of its five MLAs to TVK soon after the polls. (Agencies)

PM Modi Attacks ”Parasite” Cong, Says It Is Known For “Betraying” People

PM Modi Attacks ''Parasite'' Cong, Says It Is Known For "Betraying" People

BENGALURU, May 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attacked the Congress, accusing it of “failing” to provide good governance due to the internal power struggles in Karnataka, and “betraying” people. It has become a “parasite party” today, he charged.
He said that a “saffron sun” was rising from Bengaluru amid the BJP’s expanding political influence across the country, in remarks indicating the party’s recent electoral triumphs in West Bengal, Assam Puducherry.
“For the past three years in Karnataka, instead of resolving people’s problems, most of the government’s time here has been spent resolving internal conflicts. The Congress government remained gripped by uncertainty over leadership and power-sharing arrangements,” the PM said addressing a large gathering of BJP workers here.
Modi was referring to the ongoing power tussle between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar for the past six months.
“They cannot decide how long the chief minister will remain. They cannot decide whether another person will get a chance or not. Everything has been kept hanging,” he said.
Modi said the Congress government invariably faced anti-incumbency within months because the party lacked a governance agenda. “This is because Congress only knows how to betray people. They are false themselves, and their guarantees are also false. There is no chapter on governance in Congress’ book of power,” he charged.
The PM projected the BJP-led NDA as the embodiment of political stability and development, contrasting it with what he described as Congress’ “politics of betrayal” and administrative failure in states ruled by the party.
Claiming that the BJP represented stability in an uncertain global environment, Modi said recent election results across states reflected growing public support for the NDA’s governance model.
Referring to the NDA retaining power in Puducherry and Assam and forming its maiden government in West Bengal, and the party’s sweeping victory in Gujarat local body polls, he said the results indicated a decisive political shift.
“These election results are important for the direction of Indian politics. They reflect the mood of India’s youth, women, farmers, poor and middle class,” Modi said.
“People are saying that they want speed, not scams; they want solutions. They want politics based on national policy,” he said.
The Prime Minister said Karnataka had historically played a pivotal role in strengthening the BJP, even during the party’s early years. “I can see that a saffron sun has risen today from the land of Bengaluru. Even when the BJP was not such a large party, Karnataka gave it tremendous strength,” he said.
Modi noted that the BJP was now the number one party in Karnataka in terms of Lok Sabha representation and the second-largest force in neihgbouring Telangana.
Pointing to the BJP’s expansion in southern and eastern India, the PM said the party had moved from just three MLAs in West Bengal a decade ago to forming a government with more than 200 legislators now.
He also said the BJP’s growth in Kerala from one MLA to three indicated that the NDA would eventually emerge as a major force there as well to form a government in coming years.
He further asked why the Congress did not form a government in Kerala despite having full majority in the recently held Assembly elections.
His remarks come in the wake of the Congress high command yet to decide on who will be the Kerala chief minister as three senior leaders are vying for the post.
“We have been in power at the Centre for 12 years. BJP-NDA governments are in power in more than 21 states. We are working with the mantra that the development of states leads to the development of the nation,” he said.
Launching a sustained attack on the Congress leadership, Modi said the party, despite once winning more than 400 Lok Sabha seats, had failed to cross the 100-seat mark in the last three general elections.
He alleged that the Congress and its allies blamed everyone else for electoral defeats and even displayed contempt towards constitutional institutions.
“In my entire public life, I have never seen any mainstream political party behave like this. They have sunk so deep into despair that they have no agenda left except using abusive language,” he said.
The PM also accused the Congress of repeatedly betraying allies for political convenience.
Referring to the Congress-DMK relationship in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, he said the Congress had survived politically for years because of the DMK’s support, but now “stabbed” the regional party “in its back” when power equations changed.
He was referring to Congress extending support to actor-politician Vijay-led TVK forming government in Tamil Nadu after walking out of the DMK-led alliance.
He alleged that the Congress had similarly betrayed its own leaders in states such as Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Karnataka by making promises over leadership arrangements and later reneging on them.
“The same game is still continuing in Karnataka. Now Kerala’s turn has come,” he said.
“Wherever Congress is in power, either the treasury is being looted to serve a royal court or there are internal fights over looted money. The Congress today has become known as a parasitic party. That is why, at the first opportunity, it betrays even its allies. Hence it is often said that there is no one whom Congress has not deceived.”
“Now parasitic Congress needs another party on whose shoulders it can ride to remain politically relevant.”
The Prime Minister further accused the Congress of deceiving women for decades on the issue of reservation. He said the BJP had ended that “game” by bringing legislation providing 33 per cent reservation for women.
He referred to global instability and tensions in West Asia, saying India too was being affected by the prevailing international climate. He called upon people to conserve resources and remain united in the national interest.
Invoking historical and cultural themes, Modi noted that May 10 marked the anniversary of the 1857 uprising against British rule and said the spirit of sacrifice and courage from that struggle continued to inspire the country. He also referred to the recent observance of the first anniversary of “Operation Sindoor” and said he would attend celebrations in Gujarat marking 75 years of the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple. Vijay Sworn In As TN CM; TVK Chief’s Core Team Finds Place In Cabinet

Vijay Sworn In As TN CM; TVK Chief's Core Team Finds Place In Cabinet
CHENNAI, May 10: C Joseph Vijay was sworn-in as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on Sunday in a colourful ceremony attended by top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, ushering in the first non-DMK, non-AIADMK government in the southern state in 60 years.
His cabinet was a mix of young and experienced, with the TVK chief’s core team finding place in the maiden ministry of the 51 year-old actor-turned-politician.
In his first address, Vijay said he was not from any royal lineage and that people welcomed and accepted him. He said he will not deceive people with false promises.
Vijay’s parents– S A Chandrasekhar and Shobha, top actor Trisha and a whole lot of invitees attended the ceremony at the sprawling Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.
His first signatures on government files were to provide 200 units free electricity for domestic consumers, creating a special force for women’s safety.
Governor RV Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay and nine of his cabinet members, who included Dravidian veteran K A Sengottaiyan and young faces  Dr TK Prabhu and S Keerthana.
Amid continuous “whistling” by TVK cadres, Vijay took oath as the chief minister in the name of God and the ministers too took the oath in the name of God unlike most in the outgoing DMK regime.
TVK leaders Aadhav Arjuna, N Anand, R Nirmal Kumar, KG Arunraj and Sengottaiyan– all considered members of Vijay’s inner team, took oath as ministers.
In a departure from his trademark white shirt and beige/khaki trousers, Vijay on Sunday was decked for the occasion. He was clad in a crisp white shirt, dark pants and topped them with a blazer. With most of his cabinet colleagues also wearing shirts and trousers, the dress code of the TVK cabinet also seemed to be a departure from the usual, as white dhoti and white shirt has been the norm largely for men in Tamil Nadu politics.
Vijay’s parent were visibly overjoyed and emotional in witnessing their son scale a political peak in his maiden elections, which he won two years after floating the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
The Sunday swearing-in ushered in the first non-DMK, non-AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu, the Dravidian heartland in about 60 years, and came amidst a euphoric atmosphere with Viay fans and supporters relishing the occasion.
Vijay wrapped up the hour-long event by clicking a selfie with those on the stage, including Rahul Gandhi and his cabinet colleagues.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium transformed into a sea of excitement as thousands gathered to witness the historic transofrmation of their ‘Thalapathy’ (Commander) into ‘Muthalamaichar,’ the CM.
The atmosphere across the city was one of hard-won victory and high expectations.
Inside the venue, the mood was electric. “We are very happy because of Thalapathy,” a supporter said, echoing the sentiments of the crowds arriving since dawn.
Whistles, the TVK symbol, blared like microphones while supporters flashed the party coloured shawls with the dominant yellow to celebrate their leader’s ascent to power.
Actress Sanam Shetty, speaking to reporters, described the moment as a breakthrough for Tamil Nadu politics.
“Even after winning the majority, even after creating a historic moment… the gruelling past week of political dynamic shifts hasn’t allowed us to sleep peacefully. Today, we are going to sleep peacefully, dreaming of a better Tamil Nadu in the safe hands of our beloved Thalapathy Joseph Vijay sir,” she said.
The emotional weight of the day was most visible at the residence of Vijay’s father, Chandrasekhar.
Vijay’s mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, expressed immense confidence in her son’s new role, stating, “Vijay will lead this well; I have full faith in him”.
The cultural impact of the day was also evident as members of the film fraternity, including actor Trisha, were seen leaving their residences to attend the ceremony. The event falls on Mother’s Day, a coincidence noted by several family members and supporters as a poetic start for the “true son of Tamil Nadu”. (AGENCIES)

Govt Will Use Three Golf Courses In Valley To Promote Tourism: CM Omar

SRINAGAR, May 10: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said his government will use the three golf courses in the valley to promote the sport and tourism in the Union Territory.
“If we make a list of beautiful golf courses in the country, the three golf courses of Kashmir at Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg will make it easily. We want to use these golf courses to promote tourism,” Abdullah said at Royal Springs Golf Course here.
The chief minister was speaking to reporters after teeing off a golf tournament in which 100 golfers from across the country are taking part.
Abdullah said there is a plan to bring together 60 young golfers from the country and organise a tournament for them at Pahalgam.
“We are trying to encourage our local golfers in order to create a new generation of players while also promoting tourism through these golf courses,” he said.
The chief minister said several golfers visit Srinagar for golf whenever they find a long weekend on account of a holiday falling either on Friday or Monday.

Drug-Free J&K Campaign: 646 Arrested, 260 Kg Narcotics Seized In 28 Days

Jammu, May 10: The 100-day ‘drug-free J-K campaign’ has achieved significant success across the Union Territory, leading to the arrest of 646 persons in 614 FIRs related to drug peddling and seizure of more than 260 kg of narcotic substances, officials said.
They added that the campaign also led to the attachment and demolition of properties worth more than Rs 31 crore in the past 28 days.
The ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt J-K Abhiyan’, one of the largest campaigns against drug abuse in the Union Territory, has also witnessed massive public participation, with 2,16,123 awareness events conducted across Jammu and Kashmir, involving more than one crore participants.
According to official figures, 614 FIRs have been registered under the NDPS Act during the campaign, while 646 persons have been arrested and 435 drug peddlers apprehended. Authorities have also identified 160 drug hotspots across Jammu and Kashmir, they said.
Officials said security and enforcement agencies have seized over 260 kilograms of various narcotics, including 3.8 kg of heroin, 32.92 kg of charas and 222.31 kg of ganja so far. In addition, 21 marlas of illegal poppy cultivation were destroyed during the campaign.
Describing the campaign as a comprehensive whole-of-government initiative and a brainchild of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, they said the drive reflects coordinated institutional action involving departments of health, social welfare, information, police, education and allied agencies.
As part of the crackdown on drug networks, authorities sealed or demolished 37 houses linked to drug peddlers.
“Immovable properties worth approximately Rs 25.97 crore were seized or attached, while additional properties worth Rs 3.70 crore were demolished. Movable properties worth Rs 1.67 crore were also seized,” they said.
Officials said strict action was also taken against misuse of transport and pharmaceutical channels associated with narcotics activities.
“During the campaign, 252 driving licences and 111 vehicle registrations were cancelled, while 104 drug store licences were suspended and two cancelled,” they said.
The outreach programmes included ‘padyatras’, seminars, rallies, school and college activities, sports and cultural events, village-level campaigns and community interactions to sensitise people about the harmful effects of drug abuse, they said.
Officials said counselling and mental health support systems were strengthened under the Tele-MANAS initiative, which received 2,786 calls during the campaign period.
“Treatment and rehabilitation facilities were also expanded, with the Health Department-run addiction treatment facilities treating 44,602 patients, including 44,263 OPD cases and 339 IPD admissions,” officials said, adding that 148 patients were successfully cured and discharged after treatment.
The campaign was launched on April 11, 2026, from Jammu as a key initiative aimed at combating drug abuse, particularly among the youth. It began with a mega ‘padyatra’ led by Sinha from MA Stadium, marking the start of the 100-day drive. (Agencies)

Gill, Rashid star as GT crush RR by 77 runs

Gujarat Titans player celebrating with teammates after taking a wicket against RR in Jaipur on Saturday.
Gujarat Titans player celebrating with teammates after taking a wicket against RR in Jaipur on Saturday.

JAIPUR, May 9: Leg-spinner Rashid Khan returned to his magical best with a four-wicket haul after his skipper Shubman Gill struck a sublime 84 as Gujarat Titans outclassed Rajasthan Royals by 77 runs to move a step closer to the IPL playoffs, here on Saturday.
Gill and Sai Sudharsan (55) stitched a commanding 118-run opening stand as Gujarat Titans piled up their season-best 229 for 4 after Rajasthan Royals opted to bowl on a batting-friendly deck.
In reply, Rajasthan began in explosive fashion through teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who smashed 36 off just 16 balls with the help of three fours and three sixes, while Dhruv Jurel kept up the momentum with a rapid 24 off 10 deliveries (1×4, 3×6).
At 62/2 in five overs, Rajasthan looked firmly in the chase before Gujarat’s bowlers turned the game around to bowl the home side out for 152 in 16.3 overs.
The victory was Gujarat Titans’ fourth on the trot as they joined table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad on 14 points and tightened their grip on a playoff spot.
The pace duo of Kagiso Rabada (2/33 from 3 overs) and Mohammed Siraj (1/55) struck early blows in the powerplay before Rashid took complete control through the middle overs with a match-winning spell of 4/33.
Bowling between the eighth and 14th overs, Rashid exploited the slight turn on offer brilliantly and broke the backbone of Rajasthan’s chase.
He removed Jurel and Donovan Ferreira in the space of three balls. He first knocked back Jurel’s off stump with a teasing length delivery before rattling Ferreira with a sharp leg-break that drifted in and turned away.
He later trapped Ravindra Jadeja lbw and finished with four wickets, including three bowled dismissals, as Rajasthan kept losing wickets at regular intervals and handed the biggest win to GT.
Jason Holder wrapped up the tail returning with figures of 3/12 in his 2.3 overs.
Sooryavanshi gave Rajasthan a flying start by smashing the very first ball of the innings for six. He then took on Rabada with back-to-back sixes as the Royals raced to 26 without loss in two overs.
Siraj too came under attack, conceding three boundaries in four balls to the fearless youngster. But the India pacer eventually had the last laugh with a well-directed short ball that forced a mistimed pull, ending Sooryavanshi’s entertaining cameo.
Rabada then struck another big blow in the following over, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal, who led RR on Saturday after regular captain Riyan Parag pulled his hamstring in the previous match, with a 152kph bouncer that was miscued to extra cover.
Jurel briefly revived Rajasthan’s hopes by smashing Siraj for three sixes and a four in a 22-run over, but Gujarat wrested back control once Rashid entered the attack.
Put in to bat, Gill’s 44-ball knock, studded with nine fours and three sixes, was a masterclass in timing and strokeplay as he mixed elegance with aggression despite struggling briefly with discomfort in his left foot before reaching his fourth IPL fifty this season.

Brijesh Sharma (2/47) picked the wickets of Gill and Jason Holder in the back end but Washington Sundar (37 not out; 20 balls, 2x4s, 3x6s) played the finisher’s role along with Rahul Tewatia (14 not out; 4 balls), who smashed two sixes in a 21-run final over to take GT to their season’s highest total.
Their misery extended with Jofra Archer enduring a difficult outing early on, leaking 18 runs in the opening over, including five extras, as Sudharsan capitalised on his erratic lines. Archer leaked 46 runs from his three overs.
Left-hander Sudharsan repeatedly pierced the off-side field while Gill settled in before shifting gears with a range of authoritative strokes.
GT raced to 108 without loss in just nine overs before Rajasthan managed to slow things down through spin in the middle phase.
Yash Raj Punia (1/37) finally provided the breakthrough in the 11th over by dismissing Sudharsan and ending the towering opening partnership.

Brief Scores:

Srinagar, May 9: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary today accused the former PDP-BJP Government of allowing the drug menace to spread in J&K after 2014, saying thousands of youngsters and families continue to suffer due to the crisis.
Addressing reporters, Choudhary said the rise in drug addiction in the Union Territory began during the PDP-BJP regime and alleged that those now speaking about a “Nasha Mukt J&K” must answer for the prevailing situation.

Choudhary also targeted the previous Government of PDP-BJP over unemployment, recruitment freezes and outsourcing policies, alleging that the present shortage of manpower in departments was the result of decisions taken during the PDP-BJP tenure.
“When PDP and BJP were in power, unemployment was rampant. No teachers were recruited for a long time and posts were frozen during their tenure. Permanent jobs disappeared because outsourcing was implemented then,” he said.
Choudhary claimed that the condition of hospitals and public services had improved under the present administration and asserted that “things have changed across J&K”
Meanwhile, Choudhary stressed the need to equip students with skills required for future-ready jobs to ensure sustainable livelihood opportunities for youth.
He made the remarks during visits to Government Polytechnic College, Gogji Bagh; Government Polytechnic College for Women, Bemina; and ITI Bemina in Srinagar, where he reviewed academic activities, infrastructure and training facilities under various skill development programmes.
Choudhary directed authorities to equip laboratories and workshops with modern machinery and gadgets to ensure quality practical training.
He also stressed the need for introducing market-oriented courses aligned with present and future industry demands.
“The need is to provide market access and suitable platforms to our talented students for showcasing the products and skilled work they produce,” he said.
Interacting with students, Choudhary urged them to avail benefits under Mission YUVA and become self-reliant entrepreneurs.
“Under Mission YUVA, youth can avail loans up to Rs 10 lakh without mortgage or guarantor requirements. Work hard, utilise these opportunities and become successful entrepreneurs,” he said.
At Government Polytechnic College for Women, Bemina, Choudhary inspected the Food Processing Technology Unit and called for proper branding and marketing support for products prepared by students to improve their reach and visibility.
Responding to remarks by Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma that the National Conference was “on ventilator” and would split, Choudhary accused the BJP leader of using language “not in line with the legacy of J&K.”
“It is the fortune of the Abdullah family that the Chief Minister was born there, but the language used by the LoP is not the language of J&K. The words he uses for the Chief Minister are not part of our legacy,” he said.
Taking a jibe at Sharma, Choudhary said the BJP leader had “come from Assam after the culmination of elections” and was “tired and unaware of the actual situation in J&K.”
“If NC is on ventilator, why is he concerned only about the Government and not the issues of the people?” he asked.
