Oxygen plant made functional at DH Kulgam after 6 years

Srinagar, May 1: A 1000 LPM oxygen generation plant was today made functional after a gap of around 6 years at district hospital Kulgam in South Kashmir.
In this regard, a simple inauguration function was organised and Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat inaugurated the Oxygen generation plant and dedicated it for patient care.
On the occasion, the DC said that there is now capacity of 100 high flow oxygen beds in the hospital after induction of services of this 1000 LPM Oxygen generation plant.
It may be mentioned here that the Excelsior today carried the news about non-functional oxygen plant at Kulgam District Hospital the work for which was started 6 years ago.
The facility would help in treating COVID-19 patients of the district and reduce referral rate. In absence of the facility, the patients with respiratory ailments and pneumonia were being referred to territory care hospital for want of high flow oxygen supply.
“It will help us in reducing the burden on the territory care hospitals, which are already overburdened with the COVID-19 patients, by cutting down the referrals,” a doctor said.
The doctors at the hospital told Excelsior that the plant would ensure 60- oxygen-outlet points in the hospital with an output of around 1000 litres per minute. “It will suffice all the oxygen needs of the hospital. Now, we are in a better position to tackle the COVID 19 surge,” Medical Superintendent Dr. Muzafar Ahmad told Excelsior
He added that oxygen plant would also make sure that all the wards of the new building have high flow oxygen available. “The High pressure manifold oxygen supply was in place there. But new facility will supplement the existing facilities,” he said.
Three years ago, doctors said, the plant was put to trail, but nothing happened after that. “Nothing happened after that and plant remained useless. I am happy the plant has finally been made functional”, a doctor said.
Pertinently, the Director Health Services Kashmir on Wednesday asked the district hospitals to refrain from unnecessary referring patients to the tertiary care hospitals that are facing an immense load of COVID patients. In this order, the concerned Chief Medical Officers and Medical Superintendents were directed to ensure that no unnecessary referrals are made from districts to SKIMS, GMC and SMHS hospitals.
