Dr Sumedha Sharma murder case

JAMMU, July 12: Over four months have passed since a dentist, Dr Sumedha Sharma, was allegedly murdered by her alleged boyfriend in Janipur locality of Jammu on the day of Holi, police are yet to make any headway in the investigation of the case.
Sources said, thus far, police have not even quizzed the prime accused in the case, Dr Johar Mehmood Ganai of Bhaderwah, citing his health issues. Dr Ganai has been under treatment ever since he tried to end his life by repeatedly stabbing himself with the same kitchen knife he allegedly used to kill his colleague with.
“Condition of the accused doctor is not such that he can be investigated at this stage. We’ll start the investigation after taking him into the custody,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity.
Asked whether he has recuperated and is able to answer the police queries as part of an investigation ordered by the SSP Jammu, the police officer said, “yes, he is in a condition to speak but we will start our investigation only after taking the accused into the custody.”
The officer couldn’t explain the logic of starting investigation in custody.
Pertinently, a SIT headed by DySP Bakshi Nagar, Vikram Singh, was constituted by the Jammu Administration on March 11, 2023 to investigate the murder of Dr Sumedha Sharma by her alleged boyfriend on the day of Holi.
But after repeated protests in the town over the delay in completion of the investigation by the police team, SSP Jammu, Chandan Kohli, on April 10, 2023, reconstituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) with SP Headquarters Ramnish Gupta as its incharge, and Sachit Sharma, SDPO City South, Jammu, Vishal Shoor, SDPO Domana, SHO Bakshi Nagar, Jammu, and SHO Janipur, Jammu, as its members.
The incharge of the new SIT was advised to ensure the culmination of the investigation quickly on merit and was asked to communicate to the former the day-to-day progress in the case.
But over a month since reconstitution of the SIT, the accused has not even been quizzed about his involvement in the murder case, raising serious question mark over the intentions of the police in the case, sources said.
