JAMMU, Apr 30: More than 100 children suffering from thalassemia benefited from a two-day comprehensive medical camp organised at the Thalassemia Day Care Centre of SMGS Hospital here.
The camp was jointly organised by the Department of Pediatrics, SMGS Hospital, and J&K Thalassemia Welfare Society (JKTWS).
Renowned haematologist and thalassemia expert Dr VP Chaudhary, former Professor and Head of Haematology at AIIMS New Delhi, along with Dr JS Arora, General Secretary of National Thalassemia Welfare Society, New Delhi, visited Jammu and examined patients during the camp.
Detailed health check-ups of children were conducted and expert advice was provided to families.
The camp was coordinated by Dr Sanjeev K Digra, Professor and Head of Pediatrics Department and Coordinator of the Thalassemia Day Care Centre, along with Dr Sanjana Sharma, Assistant Professor Pediatrics.
Doctors said thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder in which normal haemoglobin is not produced, leading to chronic anaemia and other health complications. Patients require regular blood transfusions and lifelong treatment.
A special HLA typing camp was also organised by a team from CMC Ludhiana under the supervision of Dr Shruti Kakkar.
Around 40 children along with their siblings and parents provided samples for HLA typing, which is an important step for future bone marrow transplantation, considered a curative treatment for transfusion-dependent thalassemia.
Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, also visited the camp and interacted with the experts from Delhi, including JKTWS Presidnet Sudhir Sethi and Medical Advisor Dr KK Kaul.
Executive members of JKTWS, including Rajendra Pathak, Shami Kapoor, Puneet Gandotra, Narendra, Sunandan Anand were also present in the camp.
Later, JKTWS decided to hold such camps every six months on a regular basis.
Society president Sudhir Sethi thanked all doctors, hospital authorities and supporting organisations for making the camp successful.
