Opposition not ready to understand CAA: PM

KOLKATA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today urged the youth to join hands and spread awareness about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Stating that the ” Opposition is not ready to understand the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)” during an address at Belur Math, the Headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission, Mr Modi said, ” The Opposition parties are not ready to understand the CAA. ”

Reiterating that ” CAA is not to revoke anyone’s citizenship, but to accord citizenship, ” the Prime Minister stated that ” Mahatma Gandhi and other great leaders believed that India should give citizenship to repressed religious minorities of Pakistan. ”

Earlier yesterday, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee after meeting the Prime Minister at Raj Bhawan said the Central Govt’s notification of CAA will stay only on paper.

Ms Banerjee said, “Let me tell you, the Central Government notification on CAA will stay only on paper. We will not let it be implemented in Bangla at least.”

She said, ” Nothing should be done in a democracy on the basis of religion, caste, it is inhumane and illegal. ”

Meanwhile, the protest continued even today against Mr Modi as he arrived in Kolkata on a two-day visit on Saturday.

The student activists were carrying posters saying “Go back, Modi”. Hundreds of protesters participated in the protest in several parts of the city and the state.
