Srinagar, Nov 1: Security forces this evening launched an operation in Handwara against top Lashkar-e-Toiba commander.
Special Operations Group of Handwara Police and 21 RR of Army this evening cordoned off Harnipora Shailhall in Handwara after reports that a top LeT commander Abu Maaz is present in the area. However, the operation was later called off as he was not found in the village.
It may be mentioned here that on October 22, Abu Maaz slipped out of cordon when acting on a specfic information regarding presence of three militants including Abu Maaz in Hajin area of Kralgund in Handwara, Army’s 9 Para and SOG Handwara launched a cordon-and-search operation.
The militants hiding in the area opened fire on the troops, triggering an encounter. A Pakistani militant was killed while two other militants including Abu Maaz managed to escape but security forces have launched a massive operation against them. However, no contact was established with them so far.
