SRINAGAR, June 1: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary today hit back at Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma’s remarks on the Government’s future, saying only the people who elected it have the power to remove it and not political opponents making “breaking news” statements.

Responding to LOP’s remarks, Choudhary accused the BJP leader of indulging in political speculation and attempting to remain in the public spotlight through provocative statements. “As far as the Government is concerned, the Leader of Opposition is only dreaming. The Government of Jammu and Kashmir is not a nominal Government. It is a Government chosen by the poor people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Choudhary told reporters here.
He added that the members had stood by the party during difficult times and that, now that the party was in power, they would continue to support it, responding to speculation that some party MLAs were planning to leave the party.
The Deputy Chief Minister said the Government represents people from all sections of society, including residents of remote mountainous regions, border areas, villages and urban centres, “those whose children are unemployed and those who need roads, water, electricity and other basic facilities have given us this mandate,” he said.
Choudhary said no political party or opposition leader could destabilise the administration through statements. “If anyone can remove us, it is the people of Jammu and Kashmir who voted for us and made us win. Only they can remove us. Nobody else can unseat this Government,” he said.
He said opposition leaders were entitled to express their views but should not mistake publicity for political reality. “He is in the opposition and has the right to say whatever he wants. Such statements create headlines and become breaking news,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister claimed that several development projects left incomplete by previous Governments were now being completed. “Many roads, bridges, hospitals, schools and colleges remained unfinished for 11 to 13 years. Today we are completing those projects,” he said.
Choudhary pointed to the free bus travel facility for women. “Our daughters, mothers and sisters are travelling free of cost today. Who introduced this facility? Could it not have been done during the years when the BJP or the PDP were in power?” he asked.
The Deputy Chief Minister also criticised both the BJP and the Peoples Democratic Party, accusing them of making frequent statements aimed at attracting media attention. “One day the BJP makes a statement, the next day the PDP responds with another statement. Every day there is an attempt to create breaking news,” he said.
Choudhary urged the media to focus on issues affecting ordinary citizens rather than political controversies. “In our upcoming meeting we will also discuss how the media of Jammu and Kashmir can do justice to the people. The real issues of Jammu and Kashmir deserve attention,” he said.
