SRINAGAR : Only light vehicles from both sides will ply on the national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley till further orders while one-way traffic continued on Srinagar-Jammu highway and Mughal road.
Officail sources said only light vehicles were allowed from Sonamarg and other parts of the valley to move towards Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia on Srinagar-Leh national highway. However, the heavy vehicles will be allowed only after taking into consideration the road condition since a vehicle has to pass through big walls of snow .
There is possibility of avalanches due to movement of heavy vehicles in avalanche prone areas on the highway, they said, adding that once it is felt that there is no danger, heavy vehicles will be allowed from both sides. He said it has been decided that light vehicles will ply from Sonamarg in the morning hours while vehicles from other side of the Zojila pass will be allowed to move towards Kashmir in the afternoon. This, he said, has been done to avoid any accident or traffic jam at Zojila pass, where only one way will continue till further orders.
They said once the highway is declared fit for heavy vehicles, essentials, including rice, atta, sugar, kerosene oil, petrol, diesel, fresh vegetables and building material would be sent to different parts of the Ladakh region, which remained cut off for winter months.
However, only one-way traffic will continue on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country and historic Muhgal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region.
Traffic on the road was disrupted for some time yesterday due to landslides in Poonch area. (AGENCIES)
