RAMBAN, July 26: One person was killed and a Railway police officer among four persons were feared dead while 12 others sustained injuries in two tragic road accidents that occurred today in the jurisdiction of police Stations Banihal and Ramban, respectively.
According to the reports, four persons of a family were travelling in their personal car bearing registration number JK02CM-7664 from Srinagar to Jammu but on reaching near Mehar area of Ramban at around 2.30 pm, driver of the car Rakesh Kumar, an officer of Railway Protection Force (RPF), lost control over the vehicle and it plunged into river Chenab flowing along the road.

The eyewitnesses of the mishap immediately informed the police and a search and rescue operation was launched by officials of police and SDRF, Red Cross Volunteers and locals but even after hectic search operation, neither the vehicle nor the passengers of the car could be traced as due to heavy rain, the water level in the River was very high.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ramban, P D Nitya said that an information was received that one Swift car, driven by Rakesh Kumar of Paloura, Jammu along with his wife Asha Rani and sons, Sachit Bhagat and Mehul Bhagat, travelling from Srinagar to Jammu, met with an accident near Mehar in Ramban district.
“As per eye witnesses, the driver suddenly lost control and could not stop due to which the car plunged into the river. Search and rescue operation was launched by teams of District police, QRT and DRF but till now no clue of the passengers and vehicle has been found,” said the officer.
Earlier, in the morning, one person was killed and 12 injured when a truck collided with a tempo at Chamalwas Khatana Basti on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. As per the reports, the truck (bearing registration number JK13C-4760) was being driven by Kabir Ahmed Khan, son of Mohammad Hussain Khan, resident of Rafiabad, Baramulla and it was on its way from Srinagar to Jammu. When the truck reached at Chamalwas Khatana Basti at around 6 am, it lost control and collided with Tempo (bearing registration number PB07BT-8624), which was on its way towards Srinagar.
“The accident resulted in injuries to the passengers travelling in tempo who were labourers from Bijnore,” said the SSP. She added that one Sajid Ahmed, 37, son of Qayoom was referred to Government Medical College Anantnag but he succumbed to his injuries.

She said the injured were identified as Tempo driver Karanjeet Singh (40), Gajinder Singh (45), Mohammad Ayooub (39), Satish Kumar (39), Nazir Ahmed (27), Shah Nawaz (28), Shakeel Ahmed (40), Omesh (24), Mustqeem (48), Akshay (20), Mohammad Anwar (35) and Tahir Ahmed (36). All the injured were shifted to nearby Government Hospital for treatment, she added.
The SSP said that a case has been registered in this connection at police station Banihal and further investigation started.
