One killed, 6 hurt in scrap blast

SAMBA, Mar 25: One person died while six others were injured in a blast at scrap godown in Bari Brahmana Industrial area this afternoon.

The dead and injured were working as labourers and were associated in segregation of scraps along with others. The deceased has been identified as Mohan Lal, 35, resident of Rajouri. His body has been kept in mortuary of GMC for autopsy. The six injured persons have been referred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Jammu for treatment and their condition is stated to be out of danger.
Soon after the blast senior police and civil officers rushed to the factory area in Bari Brahmana and shifted the injured persons to hospital in ambulances.
SSP Samba, Benam Tosh who also reached the spot told reporters that blast took place in scraps which were being segregated in the gowdown. Ruling out any terror angle, he said it was a minor blast. The injured were shifted to Hospital and they all are out of danger, he added.
He said situation is under control and there is nothing to panic. He termed the death of a labourer unfortunate. He said a mortar shell was brought along scraps which suddenly blasted resulting into death of one person and injury to six others.
Benam Tosh, while replying to a question that how a live mortar was brought in the godown said, the entire matter will be investigated and FIR will be registered and those responsible for negligence will be arrested under law.
The Scrap Enterprises Bari Brahmana which is dealing with collection of scraps was earlier a copper factory which had been closed now and the premises have been converted into scrap enterprises.
Later the SSP also visited the GMC Jammu to see the condition of injured. He said among the six persons who received splinter injuries one person got minor injury and he was discharged after being given first aid at GMC Jammu.
The remaining five injured persons undergoing treatment in GMC included Bir Singh, 40, son of Bhagwan Dass of Barijani Bari Brahmana, Mulkraj, 40, son of Sawan of Bishnah, Somy Kumar, 30, son of Prem Nath of Ramnagar Udhampur at present Dayasar, Bari Brahmana, Kuldeep Raj, 66, son of Raj of Rangour Camp, Ramgarh and Parmanand Joshi, 40, son of Hari Krishan Joshi of Uttarakhand at present Talab Tillo Jammu.
