One dead in Gulmarg avalanche

SRINAGAR, Feb 11: A tourist guide was killed today after he came under a snow avalanche in Kongdori area of Gulmarg on a ski slope in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Vice Chairman of Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA), Nazir Ahmad Mir, told Excelsior that at around 1.20 p.m., a local tourist guide came under avalanche at Hapatkhud at Apharwat in Gulmarg.
Mir said that he has been identified as Bashir Ahmad Bakshi, son of Nazir Ahmad Bakshi, resident of Watalpora in Tangmarg area of Baramulla district.
Mir said that the rescue operation was immediately launched by police and Ski patrol team.  He said that the helicopters were also pressed into service. He said that the area where the avalanche struck is red zone and no skiers are allowed to patrol there.
Earlier, there were apprehensions that some foreign skiers might have been trapped under the avalanche.
