Jammu, Aug 14 : On the occasion of 68th Independence Day, Major Mukund Varadarajan of 44 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion has been Posthumously awarded Ashok Chakra, the country’s highest peace time Gallantry Award.
Major Mukund in an aggressive and swift operation in Shopian district on 25 April 2014 eliminated two dreaded terrorists including those who were responsible for the killing of an election official on duty a day before.
In addition, the valiant soldiers of the Northern Command were also awarded Eight Shaurya Chakras and 25 Sena Medals (Gallantry). Major Abhishek Kumar of 22 Rashtriya Rifles, Major Manohar Singh Bhati of 31 Rashtriya Rifles, Major Vishal Singh Raghav of 18 Rashtriya Rifles, Subedar Prakash Chand (Posthumous) of 8 KUMAON Regiment, Naik Ansaigra Basumatary of 5 ASSAM Regiment, Lance Naik Bharat Kumar Chhetri of 3/1 Gorkha Rifles, Sepoy Vikram (Posthumous) of 44 Rashtriya Rifles and Rifleman Prem Bahadur Roka Magar of 2/4 Gorkha Rifles have been awarded Shaurya Chakra for display of courage and elimination of terrorists in the state. These awards bear testimony to the bravery, motivation and dedication of the officers and men deployed in the Command Theatre.
Conveying his felicitations to the recipients of the prestigious award, Lt Gen DS Hooda, complimented all ranks of Northern Command for their exemplary service to the nation and exhorted them to rededicate themselves to safeguard our nation’s borders and confront new challenges with traditional professionalism and courage.
