JAMMU, Oct 4: The four-day long Philately exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi came to an end with the distribution of awards and the release of special covers on Mahatma Gandhi and Indian Army by Lt Gen KT Parnaik, GOC-in-Chief, Northern Command and Chief Post master General, J&K Circle, John Samuel, at a colourful award function at Kala Kendra here today.
More than 7000 people visited the exhibition on Gandhiji, which was first of its kind in the history of the State. The exhibition was aimed at creating awareness on Gandhiji’s values and teachings.
Lt Gen KT Parnaik, who was invited as chief guest, in his address stressed upon the people to adopt the tools of truth and non-violence as envisaged by Gandhiji for betterment of life and welfare of the country. He appreciated the initiative taken by the Department of Posts in organising this large Philately exhibition on Gandhiji. He further said that Gandhian values and teachings have a great relevance and significance that can never be underestimated.
Lt Gen Parnaik also released two special postal covers on Gandhiji and other one on Indian Army, which focused on the Sabdhavana project undertaken by Army in the State.
Samuel in his address emphasized that on the Gandhian philosophy of non-violence, which says, “Strength comes from righteousness, not force; Power comes from truth, not might”. He said that the Post office would continue to involve in the total development of the State.
As part of the exhibition, letter writing and debate competition, stamp design contest and quiz contest were organised for the students of schools and colleges.
Nikhil Sharma of BSF Senior Secondary School, Paloura was adjudged first in Gandhiji Look-a-like competition while Abhinav Dogra of Dogra Higher Secondary School stood first in Debate competition for school students. Aneet Kamal Kour of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar bagged first place in the Debate competition for College students while in Stamp Designing contest, Shivam Dogra of HSS, Shiksha Niketan stood first.
In respect of quiz contest for school students, Shubanshu Sharma and Jessica Bhat from Navyug Public School shared the first prize whereas in Quiz contest for school students, Ruksana Choudhary and Sanam Khan of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar shared the first slot. In Letter-writing competition, Kousheen Pandita of GD Goneka Public School, Jammu bagged first prize.
Lt Gen KT Parnaik distributed awards to the winners of the competitions. Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Dilbagh Singh, who was also present, released ‘My Stamp on Gandhiji’. Lt Gen DS Hooda, COC 16 Corps and Ved Kumari Ghai, president, Gandhi Seva Sadan, Jammu, were also present on the occasion.
Earlier, students of various schools presented various cultural items showcasing the cultural heritage of the State.
