SRINAGAR : There was still no respite from the cold as chilly winds and cloudy weather continued in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region, where Leh was coldest with minus 14.7 degree minimum temperature.
Snow on roof, tree tops and majority inner roads remained frozen because of chilly winds and sub zero temperature with no hope for any immediate improvement as the weather will remain dry and cold during the next two days.
There was no respite from the cold in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, where snow on roof and tree tops besides majority inner roads remained frozen as icy cold winds continued with no hope for any improvement during the next 24 hours when the weather will remain mainly dry. However, there could be light rain or snow at isolated places in the higher reaches.
Because of icy cold winds and cloudy weather, snow remained frozen on inner roads, affecting pedestrian movement as authorities had removed snow on only main roads. However, on Thursday some snow on inner roads melted after sun appeared for some time.
People alleged that snow on majority inner roads in the city was not cleared though it was claimed that snow has been cleared from all roads. This, they said, would have been cleared on papers only and bills withdrawn.
Similar reports were received from other parts of the valley.
Besides snow, water bodies, including Dal Lake near banks were frozen. At some places frozen parts gets further strengthen and children were seen throwing stones on it, particularly in the interior of the Lake.
A Met department spokesman said there was no change in the minimum temperature in summer capital, Srinagar, where it was minus 1.6 degree. The day temperature has also dropped because of cloudy weather and icy cold winds.
However, famed ski resort of Gulmarg with minus 11 degree minimum temperature was coldest in the valley.
Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himlayas also recorded minus 7.7 night temperature followed by another tourist resort Kokernag minus 6.3 degree, Qazigund minus 3.8 degree and Kupwara minus 0.8 degree.
He said there was a slight drop in the minimum temperature at Leh where it was minus 14.7 degree against yesterdays minus 14.2 degree while at Kargil it was minus 13 degree, witnessing an improvement of about seven notches. (AGENCIES)
