AKHNOOR, Mar 27: Underlining the significance of elections, Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Sham Lal Sharma has said that election is a fundamental right of all citizens and every individual must exercise his/her right to franchise and elect the representatives of their choice.
Addressing the ward members, prominent citizens, workers of Congress and National Conference and general masses at Akhnoor town here today, the Minister emphasized the need for reaching out to the masses at the grass root level and highlighting the achievements of UPA Government and sitting Member Parliament, Jammu-Poonch-Constituency during the past one decade. He asked the workers to seek mandate for MP on the basis of performance, adding that his initiatives are self speaking.
Maintaining that there is no alternative to the Congress party in the country, Sham Lal said that the party has proved its credentials since independence and transformed the entire picture of the nation. The country has earned self-respect in all fields and has become self-reliant in food grain, IT and other technologies. Congress leaders like, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Smt. Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi taken the country towards new heights, its leadership given numerous sacrifices for the nation. The party has rich and long history; therefore, people must elect the joint candidates of Congress-National Conference under alliance arrangement to ensure stability, peace and progress of the country.
Cautioning the people against the propaganda unleashed by the disruptive forces like BJP and PDP against the Congress, the Minister said that these unscrupulous forces appear at a particular season (during election) and try to spread false rumors inciting the sentiments of innocent people in the name of religion, caste, creed and color. This has been proved in the past when the BJP was in power for small stints. They failed in all fronts, the cadres of party frustrated and launched communal frenzies at many places in the country.
