Night temp drops in Kashmir as Chillai Kalan ends

SRINAGAR, Jan 30: The 40-day long harshest part of the winter – ‘Chillai Kalan’- ended today while the minimum temperatures recorded a drop at most places in Kashmir.
While the ‘Chillai Kalan’, which started from December 21, ended today, it is followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’.
A Meteorological Department said that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.3 degree Celsius against last night’s minus 1.0 degree Celsius the previous night.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 7.4 degree Celsius against minus 7.5 degree Celsius the previous night. The temperature is 0.1 degree Celsius above normal for this time of the year.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 3.2 degree Celsius against minus 3.1 degree Celsius the previous night.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2.8 degree Celsius against minus 3.3 degree Celsius the previous night.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 7.0 degree Celsius against minus 2.8 degree Celsius the last night.
Kupwara recorded a low of minus 2.4 degree Celsius against 1.5 degree Celsius the previous night.
Leh recorded a low of minus 11.7 degree Celsius against last night’s minus 14.6 degree Celsius while mercury in Kargil settled at minus 17.6 degree Celsius. Drass recorded a low of minus 21.7 degree Celsius against last night’s minus 14.4 degree Celsius.
