Jammu, Feb 1: Badal Sarkar’s classic play ‘Evam Inderjeet’ in Hindi marked the opening day of NIFT 2020, the two week long international theatre festival, at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Sponsored by Nutan Prayas Manch in collaboration with Lakhshya the Aim, the 13-play bonanza entitled Nutan International Festival 2020 (NIIT 2020), is a welcome private initiative under which theatre groups led by renowned directors from different parts of country will be performing acclaimed plays in the winter capital from Feb 1 to Feb 13.
Presented by Rangkalpa, the theatre group form Hyderabad, under direction of Satyabrata Rout, today’s Hindi adaptation by Pratibha Agarwal, came out to be an entertaining as well as artistically impressive performance. Evam Inderjeet’ written in 1960s is an abstract, absurdist play with a central theme theme of existential angst wherein fear, frustration, despair, isolation, and anxiety are the pivotal experiences of modern Indian educated middle class youth.
The play while artistically portraying lives and vicissitudes of principal characters Kamal, Amal, Vimal and Evam Indirajit highlights the utter meaninglessness of existence which leads to a state of ‘metaphysical anguish’, that is deeply ingrained the middle class psyche.
Satyabrata Rout, a NSD graduate and the director, succeeded in putting forth the existentialist dilemma through a play design wherein the abstract was effortlessly manifested though many a time couched in the comic. The eight-member cast left a mark on the audience for their display of acting prowess. Artistic combination of background score and light design was another highlight of today’s play.
Tomorrow, Flying Feather Association, Delhi will present Hindi play ‘Babuji’ under direction of Rajesh Singh with music by Late Karant Sahib.
