JAMMU, Mar 20: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked today due to landslides at Mehar near Ramban.
Official sources said that due to sudden landslides at Mehar, the busy Jammu-Srinagar Highway was closed at around 2.30 pm today. They said hundreds of vehicles have been stranded on both sides of the highway in Ramban and Nashri areas.
Sources further said that National Highway authorities tried to clear the slide but due to frequent falling of boulders, the restoration work has been hampered. They said the weather was dry in the area but suddenly landslides took place due to road widening work. The light vehicles have been diverted via Maitra through old Chenab bridge, sources added.
Sources said today down convoy towards Jammu was scheduled and hundreds of vehicles have been stranded on the highway. They said till 10 pm the highway was blocked and authorities were trying to restore it by taking risk in the darkness. It was hoped that road will be cleared by mid night.
