A senior Traffic police official said that till 9.30 pm tonight, the restoration work could not be initiated. Over 600 vehicles including goods carriers and LMVs were stranded on both sides of the highway. It is dangerous to initiate restoratuion work during night hours and the highway is likely to be restored by tomorrow morning, he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that the highway at the same point remained blocked for about four hours on Wednesday but its was restored at around 2 pm. The Army convoy also remained stuck for long which was later cleared on priority. This area has turned most vulnerable as several mishaps took place here during recent past. The contractors are throwing muck/ debris directly into Chenab river in sheer violation of NGT norms, despite several warnings from the agency and the PCB.
