SRINAGAR, Feb 7: In the first, a local non-government organization (NGO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jammu and Kashmir Government for setting up a world-class university in Valley.
The founder of Y S Makhdoomi Memorial Educational Trust, Dr Mehboob Makhdoomi, who has been working on the project for the last two years, told Excelsior that MoU was the big target that has been achieved and the work on the practical part of the project would start once it gets approval under the University Act.
“Next week we are submitting a bill to the Education Department. The bill has to take a legal course before getting passed. Once that is done, implementing the project on the ground will start,” he said. He is hopeful as the project is in line with the new education and industrial policy.
Makhdoomi said he needs local and Government support for making this project successful. “We are seeking financial support from people as the university is not profitmaking. At the same time, we need support from the Government for the establishment of the university,” he said.
About the project, Dr. Makhdoomi said that apart from providing world-class education in all the major disciplines, the University will strive toward inculcating education based on quality research and skill development of the youth. “The fundamental idea behind the project is to execute the fourth industrial revolution in J&K with research, innovation, and upskilling,” he said.
He said that the University will offer all the major disciplines that exist except for medicine. The disciplines that are being focused on include artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics, computing, fine tech, and biotech and block chain technology.
The highlights of the project include creative skill development, innovation, teamwork, problem-solving, and research. The focus of the project is ultimately helping the economy of J&K grow by conducting research and competing internationally.
Apart from skill development and other related aspects, he said that the University will also strive to bring scientific advancement in sectors like agriculture, horticulture and other allied sectors through research aiming at increasing the productivity in these sectors.
