SRINAGAR, June 1: Monika Dhami, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the 2001 batch, today assumed charge as the Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (PCIT) in Srinagar.
Dhami brings with her extensive administrative, policy-making and training experience acquired over a distinguished career spanning more than two decades. She has served in several important assignments, including key policy-making roles in the Department of Economic Affairs, besides handling corporate and salary assessment charges within the Income Tax Department.
She has also had a notable stint at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, where she served as the lead trainer for newly inducted civil servants.
Prior to her present posting, she held the important position of Additional Director General (Training) in the Directorate of Training, New Delhi.
The Government of India has strategically posted Dhami to Srinagar with a mandate to work closely with taxpayers, tax professionals, trade and industry bodies and other stakeholders to further strengthen a fair, transparent and taxpayer-friendly tax administration across the region.
Dhami was formally welcomed by officers and officials of the Income Tax Department at Srinagar. During her first interaction with departmental staff, she highlighted the significant transformations taking place within the Income Tax Department, particularly the increasing use of technology in tax administration, faceless assessment and appeal mechanisms, and measures aimed at easing compliance for taxpayers.
She reiterated that voluntary compliance remains the cornerstone of the country’s tax system and emphasized the need to foster a culture of trust, cooperation and mutual respect between taxpayers and the department.
The Principal Commissioner also stressed the importance of effective grievance redressal mechanisms and announced that special attention would be given to taxpayer outreach programmes, awareness campaigns and stakeholder consultations. She said these initiatives would help ensure that concerns and difficulties faced by the public are addressed promptly and efficiently.
An alumnus of the London School of Economics, Dhami holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy. Throughout her bureaucratic career, she has been known for advocating the preservation of local cultural spaces alongside promoting efficient and citizen-centric governance.
Recognizing the rapidly evolving nature of public service delivery, Dhami also underscored the importance of continuous learning and capacity building within the department. She assured officers and staff that skill development and professional growth would remain a key priority during her tenure.
