New GMC Principal should end sufferings of patients: DAK

SRINAGAR, Dec 20: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) today hoped that newly appointed Principal Dr Kaiser will revamp Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, saying the largest health institution is in “mess”.
The DAK president, Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan said they are hopeful that new principal will revive GMC which is in a sorry state of affairs.”The prestigious health institution was being run on adhocism which was responsible for its deterioration and poor patients became victims.
Dr Nisar said: “New Principal has to live up to the expectations of people and it is his duty to end sufferings of patients. Patients suffer severely and leave hospitals dissatisfied with the care they receive. The services of senior doctors are to be made available all the time for patients particularly during emergency time when they are needed most.”
The DAK present said it is “painful” to see patients waiting in long serpentine queues for hours and they end up being seen by interns and students in tertiary care hospitals. “Patients have to wait for months for procedures and surgeries as senior doctors are not available full time for patients. The elite practice of winter vacation for senior doctors leaves patients to fend for themselves at difficult times,” he added.
“It is the poorest of poor who come to Government hospitals and they have to pay hefty sums on tests and medicines which they cannot afford. We believe and trust that new principal will bring transparency and accountability in GMC so that work culture is inculcated and patient care is improved,” he hoped.
