JAMMU, Dec 20: Mocking on the statement of Chief Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed for opening of Suchetgarh Border on the line of Wagah Border, former MP and National Conference leader Sheikh Abdul Rehman today said that it took Mr Mufti 13 years to realise the importance of Suchetgarh boarder.
Mr Rehman claimed that he had suggested Mufti Mohd Sayeed to open Suchetgarh Border in 2002 when the latter was vigorously working for opening of LoC at Uri, which was aimed at appeasing the vote bank of PDP.
“I had explained to Mufti Sayeed that in 1947 maximum displacement took place from Jammu area and Sialkote area of either sides of border and it would have been more beneficial for people of both side to have journey of one hour across the border from Suchetgarh rather than travelling via Uri and Muzaffarabad,” Mr Rehman said.
“It is high time for State Government to impress upon Central Government to open Suchetgarh Border. It will not only make people to people contact more effective but it will be economically and politically beneficial to both the countries,” the NC leader further said and added that both New Delhi and Islamabad should remain cautious about certain elements on both sides who never wanted good relation between the two neighbours.
