SRINAGAR, May 5: Former J&K Chief Minister and National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah today said that the extension of the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) to J&K would be detrimental to the interests of the students from the State and would put their future in peril.
Appealing the Supreme Court to protect the interests and safeguard the future of the students from the State, Dr Abdullah said the State Government should treat this matter with utmost seriousness as any callousness would harm the dreams of our students who have been studying hard in preparation for their entrance examinations.
Dr Abdullah said the extension of NEET to the State would also rob the State’s female students of the 50 percent reservation that was put in place by a National Conference Government in the State’s Medical Colleges to boost women empowerment and education in the State. “Our girls would have to compete on a national level for this reservation and the very purpose of reserving 50 percent seats in Medical Colleges for girls would be defeated. Apart from this, our students have spent the last two years preparing for their entrance examinations based on the State board syllabus and curriculum while as NEET is based on the CBSE curriculum. This has created anxiety in the minds of our students and the State Government has been reluctant to allay their fears and assuage their apprehensions and those of their parents”, Dr Abdullah said this while addressing party workers and public at Pattan today.
Inaugurating the new Masjid and Ziyarat Sharief at Hazrat Mohuiddin Khan Sahab Naqshbandi (RA) at Nihalpora Pattan, Dr Abdullah prayed for the State’s peace and prosperity and said the State Government should uphold its promises made to the people and ensure the delivery of governance in every nook and corner of the State. He expressed disappointment at the induced misery because of the State Government’s insensitivity and apathy clearly demonstrated by the extension of NFSA to the State.
The NC leader was accompanied by Sajadah Nisheen Peerzada Shajat Ali Naqshbandi, Dr Ali Mohammad Mattoo, Suraya Abdullah, family members of Dr Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Engineer Haji Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Haji Ghulam Mustafa Shah and various senior citizens and prominent activists of the area.
