Srinagar, June 9: National Conference Party President Dr. Farooq Abdullah today appointed Senior NC leader and Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Ali Mohammad Sagar as the new General Secretary of the party.
At a meeting of NC office-bearers and functionaries convened at NC Headquarters at Nawa-e-Subah Complex in Srinagar, Party President Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Working President and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the contributions of Sheikh Nazir Ahmed in building National Conference and nurturing it through some of the harshest times will be written in golden letters in the history of this nation.
Dr. Farooq Abdullah said that unfortunately Sheikh Nazir Ahmed’s health had deteriorated over the years after decades of selfless service to the institution and roots of National Conference. The need of the hour is to reach out to the workers and the public in every nook and corner of this State and the party has decided to appoint Ali Mohammad Sagar as the new General Secretary of the party to reach out to the grassroots and leave no stone unturned to consolidate and augment the enviable organizational strength of the party”, he said.
Omar Abdullah said that the party has decided to appoint Ali Mohammad Sagar as the General Secretary of the party to strengthen the hands of the workers and the cadre. “He (Sagar) will receive total and complete cooperation from us in his endeavors to strengthen the party and ensure that the workers are heard, respected for their views and acknowledged in their service”, Omar said.
He said that it was easy to take over a position of responsibility in easier, smoother times but it was the test of leadership and caliber to take over such a responsibility at a time that demands enormous hardwork and dedication. He said that Sagar’s efforts would be complimented with active cooperation and engagement at every step.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sagar, said that he would leave no stone unturned to consolidate the rank and file of the party and reach out to the grassroots level workers to alleviate both their grievances and those of the public.
Stating that National Conference was a party that had braved great betrayals, political conspiracies and hardships in its glorious history, Sagar said that the need of the hour was to exhibit exemplary unity and oneness of purpose by striving not for personal agendas and interests but the interests of the party.
He said the flag of National Conference was more important than any individuals and personal political goals. “It was Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah who sacrificed his entire life for the welfare of our nation and this party, its stages and podiums all exist because of Sheikh Abdullah’s leadership and struggles. We must bear this in mind at all times and remember that slogans of the party and its towering leadership should come before any personal slogans and goals”, Sagar said.
Provincial Presidents Devender Singh Rana and Nasir Aslam Wani were also present during the meeting.
