Need of morality in public life

Swami Ram Swarup Ji, Yogacharya
Our most ancient eternal culture Vedas stress on the need for morality in public life. For example- Yajurved mantras 1/1 and 40/2 preach us to learn and thereafter discharge our moral duties honestly and faithfully according to Vedas. Yogeshwar Sri Krishna Maharaj was learned of Vedas, so he knew about all worldly matters including form of pious deeds and moral duties to be discharged. In this connection, we must pay our attention towards Bhagwad Geeta shlok 3/15 where he also says to Arjun- (Karma Brahma+Ut+Bhavam Viddhi) i.e. you should know that form of moral duties originates from Vedas.
Therefore, at present, to know about moral duties, an aspirant needs to listen to Vedas from a learned acharya, in the absence of which, mostly people are misled. Based on the said reason, Yogeshwar Sri Krishna Maharaj in Bhagwad Geeta shlok 2/47 made Arjun to remember his moral duties (Kartavya-karma) of a Kshatriya and preached him to discharge his moral duties of a warrior to fight against the enemies to establish dharma (moral duties).
Yajurved mantra 7/48 preaches – “Kaamaaye Adaat” i.e. “Soul desires to do deeds and the God awards its result.”
A person opens and closes his eyes at his own wish, which makes us understand that nobody can be either desireless or deedless.
Therefore, one should only desire to discharge one’s moral duties (pious deeds) and not immoral deeds. This act maintains morality in the nation as was maintained in previous yugas.
The above principle applies to all human-beings, therefore all those in position and politics, should maintain high moral standards, to be an example for the rest of the society and to make nation strong.
Their every action should be selfless, honest, faithful and directed towards public welfare.
To discharge such duties faithfully the government officials will have to be religious minded, gentle, truthful, virtuous etc. History proves that in the previous yugas, the above Vedic spiritual education was in vogue and the peace maintained but to our bad luck, in the present times, due to lack of knowledge of Vedic spiritualism, most of the people have forgotten everything including moral duties instead they have become too much materialistic, selfish and are drifting away from spiritual values and the truth of life, hence corruption.
I quote here a small example that God in Atharvaved mantra1/34/3 preaches that meeting, separation and speech should be pleasantly sweet but for the last several years noise, roar, unparliamentary language, ravages of hatred, direct insult of family members, insult of women and other several shortcomings are regularly being observed in the speech of most of our top class politicians. At this juncture, where does the morality, good behavior, brotherhood and sweet spoken language stand? Actually the said behavior of our politicians spreads the message in the public- “As the King, so are the subjects.”
According to Rigved mantra 10/135/1, 2, the present life has been awarded by God to us based on our previous lives’ deeds. God preaches, if we get progress in spiritualism as well as politics and discharge other moral duties simultaneously then the country gets permanent peace, maintains international brotherhood and several good qualities.
So, we must follow Vedic preach to maintain morality and to destroy illusion.
In view of the above, “Work is worship” is true to some extent but every work is not worship. For example- if one indulges in wrong practices or immoral acts that is in no way a worship. Work is worship only if it is discharged according to Vedas and leads one to higher path because the real, eternal and everlasting definition of dharma (moral duties) as mentioned in Mimansa Shastra Sutra 1/2 is that the Karmas (deeds) inspired by Vedas are called moral duties otherwise sins. So, every work is not worship.
In human-life, it is our duty to pray (prarthna) to God, praise (stuti) and worship God by performing daily agnihotra/Yajyen with ved mantras and doing name jaap of God etc.
Sri Ram, Sri Krishna Maharaj, several other RajRishis and Rishi-Munis followed the same path. If we also follow it, it means we are real followers of our ancestors as per Samved mantra 744. The said mantra states to worship God as was being worshipped by our ancestors, right from the beginning of the earth and based on Vedic philosophy. At present also, if somebody asks the learned of Vedas as to whom does he worship? Then his simple answer would be “I worship the God whom yours and my ancestors worshipped in the previous yugas. How can the said true statement be negated because our all ancestors of previous yugas worshipped God according to Vedas only because at that time, no present sects or other present paths existed.
The spiritual pious path may be followed by other communities as per their respective faiths.
Anyone obeying and practising the above mentioned code of discharging one’s moral duties and ethics would certainly be blessed with peaceful and blissful life by God, say Vedas.
