SRINAGAR, July 10: National Conference today paid glowing tributes to Madar-e-Meharbaan, Begum Akbar Jahan, on her 17th death anniversary.
In a message on the occasion, NC president, Dr Farooq Abdullah, while paying glowing tributes, said Begum Akbar Jahan was an epitome of selfless social service, conviction, piety and courage.
“Madar-e-Meharbaan was not only a pillar of moral support to Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah but also a compassionate mother of the people who always demonstrated a commitment to lead them in his absence against all odds. She worked tirelessly for the amelioration of the poor and weak sections of society and took upon herself the role to be the voice of the downtrodden”, Dr Farooq said.
NC working president, Omar Abdullah, in his message, highlighted the tremendous work done by Madar-e-Meharbaan for the cause of women empowerment in the State and said she was a staunch advocate of educating women and providing them with equal rights of dignity, empowerment and honor.
“Madar-e-Meharbaan is a timeless icon that will continue to be a beacon of inspiration for those who are tirelessly working for the cause of women empowerment and the rights of the voiceless sections of society. Her contribution in establishing Development Boards and Hostels for tribal and economically backward sections of the society is historic and continues to bear fruit to this day. NC will continue to treasure the legacy of Madar-e-Meharbaan and work with honesty and sincerity to uphold our values and ideals”, Omar said.
Senior NC leaders including NC general secretary, Ali Muhammad Sagar, additional general secretary, Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, provincial president, Nasir Aslam Wani, Abdul Rahim Rather, besides all party legislators and former legislators paid glowing tributes to Madar-e-Meharbaan.
Congregational Fateha-Khwaani will be held and floral tributes paid at Qaid Mazaar, Naseem Bagh at 11 am on Tuesday morning.
