JAMMU, Aug 19: National Conference today expressed serious concern over continued detention of top party leadership including President Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, describing the move as undemocratic and authoritarian.
“On the one hand the Centre and the State Government is claiming normalcy and on the other harsh curbs have been imposed on the entire population in most of the areas, with their democratic rights usurped”, senior National Conference leaders said in a joint statement, issued from Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan this afternoon.
They questioned the moral authority of the ruling class in muzzling voice of the people and showing insensitivity and intolerance to dissent, the corner stone of democracy the greatest and largest democracy has been known for.
“What could be irony than the fact that those who strived all their life to promote and sustain democracy in the state despite hostile situation are finding their voices choked”, the leaders said, hoping sanity to prevail and end to siege in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The idea of secular and democratic India stands trampled here with people feeling insecure and harassed due to curbs on their liberty, they added.
