NOWSHERA, Nov 13: Lambasting National Conference (NC)-Congress regime for brazenly bulldozing democratic institutions in J&K during the last six years, PDP candidate for Nowshera Assembly segment, Surinder Choudhary, today said that elected Panchayat members are looking for an opportunity to teach this regime a lesson.
Addressing a series of public meetings in Nowshera and adjoining localities to intensify his campaign, Choudhary said that joining of over 40 Panchayat members including 13 Sarpanchs in the PDP was an indication that elected Panchayat members were feeling betrayed by the present regime.
Assuring people that PDP would strengthen democratic institutions in the State to delegate power at grass-root level, Choudhary reminded the gathering that it was during the regime of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that elections of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) were held after a gap of three decades.
Choudhary observed that during the last six years the present regime has eroded and undermined all prestigious democratic institutions, be it Assembly, local bodies or Panchayati Raj Institutions.
“Civic bodies elections were scheduled to be held in the month of February 2010 but the Government has delayed the elections without any reason”, he said and added that indifferent attitude to give powers to the Panchayats and inordinate delay in conducting civic bodies’ election reflect dictatorial mindset of the present dispensation.
“Omar Abdullah led regime has backstabbed elected Panchayat members. Let us work together to establish a new system in J&K where every democratic institution should be strengthen to enhance public participation in decision making”, he said and assured the people that PDP would make institutional arrangement to ensure that democratic institutions flourished in J&K.
