SRINAGAR, June 12: Natio-nal Conference general secretary, Ali Mohd Sagar today said that the party was committed to working towards restoring peace and stability in the State and said it was incumbent upon both the Central and the State Government to take a political initiative that would provide relief to the people.
Addressing party’s South Zone meeting at party headquarters, today, the NC general secretary congratulated Dr Bashir Ahmed Veeri on being appointed as the party’s Zonal president for South Kashmir and Altaf Ahmed Kaloo on being appointed as the district president for Anantnag. Sagar also felicitated Dr Mohd Shafi on being appointed as the vice president for Kashmir Province and Shabir Ahmed Kulay on being appointed as vice president South Zone. The meeting was also addressed by NC provincial president Nasir Aslam Wani.
Addressing the meeting, Sagar said youth of the Valley, especially in South Kashmir had been alienated due to glaring U-turns by the powers that be and it was a result of these U-turns, hollow rhetoric and broken promises that the situation has reached an alarming stage.
“Every single promise made to the youth has been broken in the last almost four years. There is still no sign of any confidence building measures and no concrete political initiative has been taken. Leaders in the Central Government are still talking in different voices on the need to initiate dialogue and the State Government led by PDP remains clueless with its sole aim to be in power. In these circumstances, it is the duty of National Conference to safeguard the rights and interests of our people,” NC general secretary said.
Felicitating Dr Veeri and Altaf Kaloo for assuming charge as the Zonal president South Kashmir and district president Anantnag, respectively, Sagar asked them to further strengthen the party at the grassroots level and reach out to the youth in an effort to evolve a consensus to fight against those manipulative and disruptive powers who have pushed the State into the throes of instability and turmoil.
The meeting was attended by senior party leaders including former MP Ghulam Nabi Ratanpuri, NC provincial secretary Showkat Ahmed Mir, Mohd Sayeed Akhoon, district president Kulgam Abdul Majeed Larmi, district president Pulwama Mohiuddin Mir, District president Baramulla Javed Ahmed Dar, Showkat Ahmed Ganai, Sheikh Muhammad Rafi, Ghulam Nabi Adigami, Riyaz Ahmed and others.
