SRINAGAR, May 28: A meeting of Awami Mutahida Mahaz (AMM) has said the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Nawaz Sharif meet a good beginning to rejuvenate the frosty relations between the two estranged neighbours.
“We observed that though it was known that the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif would be symbolic rather than on any substantive issues but nevertheless, their meeting was good beginning,” a statement of the amalgam said.
The statement said its members, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, Sheikh Abdul Rehman, Abdul Rashid Kabuli and Abdul Rehman Tukroo, held a meeting to discuss post swearing-in interaction between the two premiers.
“Announcement that the foreign secretaries of the two countries will be in touch for a movement forward was also taken as a good beginning by the AMM leaders. ‘The foreign secretaries meeting must be aimed at formalizing the dialogue process between the two countries that is presently stalled due to various reasons,” the statement said.
It said: “Normalization of Indo-Pak relation is in the interest of both the countries and the region. Indications that the foreign secretaries might meet again is welcome but the real engagement will require both prime ministers to overcome domestic constraints.”
