JAMMU, Jan 11: Globally acclaimed Russian writer Anton Chekov’s story ‘A Problem’ (Ek Samasya) was staged by Natrang under its weekly theatre series- ‘Sunday Theatre’, here today.
Translated by Satyendra Shart in Hindi, the play was directed by Balwant Thakur. Earlier in his welcome address Natrang Director, Mr Thakur said that it has been the endeavour of Natrang to expose Jammu audience to the best of the world literature and ‘A Problem’ by Anton Chekov adds yet another accomplishment of the Sunday Theatre team of Natrang.
He complemented the entire team for their tireless efforts for keeping the tradition of regular theatre live in Jammu.
The play is based on a story of a young man named Saka (played by Masood Qadir) who forged an IOU and then didn’t pay his debt, so his family had to debate whether they were going to pay Saka’s debt off or simply let him go to trial. Through this story Anton Chekov has tried to convey that that people will not change their bad habits unless they have paid for them.
There is a big debate in the family, most of the family members are worried about the reputation of the family and do not wish to have any scandal. A great argument breaks out between Imran (Played by Varun Sharma) and the Colonel (Rajan Thakyal) The Colonel believes that Saka should be punished and should face the consequences for what he had done by going to jail and serving his time, which is where he would probably die.
On the other hand, Riyaz (played by Namit Dubey) the other uncle, believes that he should not be punished this time, but if it happens again, then Saka will pay the price. And the play goes on ….. .
The other actors who participated in the play included Ankush Lakhnotra, Juhi Singh, Sachin Bamba and Arun Sharma.
The presentations of the play were done by Ashwani Bali and the show was coordinated by Mohd Yaseen.
