JAMMU, Apr 20: Natrang presented English play ‘Great Expectations’ which is based on Charles Dickens’ Novel with the same name, in its Weekly Sunday Theatre Series.
The play was adapted and directed by Aarushi Thakur, a post graduate in International politics from University of Leicester, UK and a trained actor from Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London.
Rakesh K Gupta, Principal Secretary to Governor of J&K, was the chief guest at the occasion.
The play presented a very vivid picture of the early Victorian era and the progress of ‘Pip’ from childhood through often painful experiences to adulthood is presented before the audience. He encounters various people in this journey and few become a part of his life leaving a dramatic impact on him. He meets Miss Havisham who is locked up with her unhappy past with a broken heart. He also meets the love of his life, Estella who never acknowledges that she is capable of love, thus escapes any commitment.
In this journey Pip discovers his true self and his values. In the end Estella realises and identifies her true self with Pip irrespective of her teachings that have always taught her to be arrogant and heartless. The play ends with a twist in the original story written by Dickens; Estella leaves her fiancée, who is the wealthiest man in England to marry Pip.
The Natrang artists who acted in the play include Gopal Sharma, Gopi Sharma, Susheel Raina, Sanchita Dubey, Gauri Thakur, Namit Dubey, Mahikshit Singh Langeh, Namrata Chib, Syed Mudassir Ali, Rajan Thakyal, Vrinda Bakshi, Vanshika Gupta and Shreya Gupta.
The sound of the play was executed by Uplaksh Singh Kotwal and the lights were handled by Varun Sharma. The sets were erected by Ashwani Bali and Pankaj Verma while the show was coordinated by Mohd Yaseen and Sumeet Sharma.
