JAMMU, Mar 15: A two-day national seminar on “Geology and Climate of Himalaya” began today in the Department of Geology, University of Jammu.
Prof R D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor JU, inaugural the seminar. He highlighted the importance of Himalaya for India and asked the participants and students to save the climate of Himalaya. He said that the global warming and ozone layer depletion are a threat to human race and only we can reverse the trend by changing our habits. He asked the participants to appreciate the natural beauty and the herbal and geo resources of the Himalaya and do research for their sustainable development.
Dr Rajesh Sharma, Scientist G and Group Head of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, was the key note speaker and guest of honour in the inaugural function. He informed about the research done by the Wadia Institute in the various aspects of the Himalaya and invited delegates, scholars and students to use the state of art facilities available in the institute. He also delivered a key note address on the Mineral Resources of Himalaya.
Earlier, Prof Pankaj Srivastava, Head of the Department and Convener of the seminar, highlighted the achievements of the Department in national and international arena. He threw light on the focal theme of the seminar and also informed that the awards shall be given to the best oral and poster presentation.
The other key note speaker in the seminar today was Prof B S Kotlia from Kumaun University. He delivered a talk on the climate and caves.
