SRINAGAR/JAMMU, May 9: Continuing its endeavour to fulfill the constitutional commitment of providing swift, cost-effective, and efficient dispute resolution to the masses in general and the litigant public in particular, the J&K Legal Services Authority under the patronage of Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice, High Court of J&K and Ladakh (Patron-in-Chief, J&K Legal Services Authority), the leadership of Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Executive Chairman, J&K Legal Services Authority and the guidance of Justice Sanjay Dhar, Chairperson, High Court Legal Services Committee organized Second National Lok Adalat of the year 2026 across the UT of Jammu & Kashmir, to promote amicable settlements in a wide range of cases.

With a view to facilitating meaningful settlements, pre-Lok Adalat sittings and counselling sessions were held well in advance by the Legal Services Institutions across the Union Territory.
Justice Sanjeev Kumar, inaugurated the National Lok Adalat at District Court Complex, Srinagar. Upon his arrival, the Justice Kumar was received by Haq Nawaz Zargar, Principal District & Sessions Judge (Chairperson, DLSA) Srinagar, Shazia Tabassum, Member Secretary, J&K Legal Services Authority, Tasleem Arief, Special Judge, Anti-Corruption, Srinagar, Tabasum Qadir Parray, Secretary, DLSA Srinagar along with other Judicial Officers of the District Judiciary.
During his visit, the Executive Chairman inspected various benches constituted for the Lok Adalat and interacted with the Presiding Officers, members of the benches, Advocates and litigants.
As per the information received from various Legal Services Institutions working in different districts across the UT of J&K, out of total 89,222 cases taken up by 180 Benches in the day long National Lok Adalat, 83, 623 cases were amicably settled and disposed off involving an amount of Rs.42,09,04,185 as compensation/settlement amount in cases like Motor Accident Claims, civil, criminal, labour disputes, Electricity and Water Bills, Land Acquisition, Family matters, cheque dishonor and Bank Recovery etc.
Shazia Tabassum, Member Secretary, J&K Legal Services Authority, appreciated the coordinated efforts of all District Legal Services Authorities and other Legal Services Institutions across the Union Territory.
She further informed that Special Lok Adalats for cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act, particularly cheque dishonour matters, shall also be held on July 18, 2026 and November 21, 2026.
In Rajouri, Lok Adalat was held today at the District Court Complex Rajouri and in all other courts of the District under the chairmanship of Rajinder Sapru, Chairman District Legal Services Authority Rajouri.
During the National Lok Adalat a total of 1,189 cases, including both pre-litigation and post-litigation matters, were taken up before the three benches, out of which 902 cases were amicably settled. An amount of Rs 1,54,22,230 was realized as compensation during the proceedings.
In the Court of the Principal District & Sessions Judge Rajouri and Additional District & Sessions Judge Rajouri, 42 MACT cases were taken up, out of which 32 cases were settled and an amount of Rs 1,34,75,812 was awarded as compensation to the claimants.
District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Reasi, organised the National Lok Adalat under the supervision of Khalil Choudhary, Chairman, DLSA (Principal District & Sessions Judge) Reasi under the guidance of Pooja Gupta, Secretary, DLSA Reasi.
During the Lok Adalat, a total 3152 Cases were taken up by the 15 Benches constituted, out of which 2435 cases were disposed off amicably resulting in a settlement worth Rs 2,83,58,393.
Meanwhile, the National Lok Adalat was conducted today in District Court Complex, Jammu, under the guidance of Chairman DLSA/Principal District & Sessions Judge R. N. Watal and overall supervision of Sub-Judge/ Secretary DLSA Maleeka Sharma.
A total of 26 benches, comprising Judicial Officers and Panel Lawyers/LADCs of DLSA were constituted to hear the cases. Secretary DLSA Maleeka Sharma played an important role in coordinating arrangements, ensuring the smooth conduct of proceedings across all designated venues.
Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Jammu also settled several Cases.
An amount of Rs. 85,00,000/- was awarded in favour of Mohammad Jamil (claimant) after settlement. The amount was paid as compensation by Iffco Tokio Gen Insurance Co.
An amount of Rs. 25,00,000/- was awarded in favour of Geeta Devi (claimant) after settlement. The amount was paid as compensation by HDFC ergo.
An amount of Rs. 20,00,000/- was awarded in favour of Sardara Begum (claimant) after settlement. The amount was paid as compensation by National India Assurance Company.
In all 986 cases of different nature were taken up, out of which 576 cases were settled. The total Amount recovered stood at Rs. 107547711.
In Anantnag, the National Lok Adalat was inaugurated by Tahir Khurshid Rainna, Principal District & Sessions Judge (Chairman District Legal Services Authority) Anantnag, at District Court Complex Anantnag.
A total of 850 matters were taken up for their amicable settlement, out of which 574 matters were settled. Besides, an amount of Rs.1,03,65,392 was realized in total in the settlement.
