Jammu, July 22: National artists called on Regional Director ICCR, Jammu Balwant Thakur at ICCR headquarters here today to discuss the contemporary scene of visual arts scene in the country and the possibilities of ICCR’s active role in rejuvenating the arts activities in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Led by Umesh Kumar Sexna, former Vice-Chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi of Utter Pradesh who is currently the Associate Professor of college of Arts and Crafts, Lucknow, the group included Gunjan Tyagi of Delhi-an alumni of J.J. College of Arts, Mumbai who has the credit of having participated art shows Internationally in Hungary, Japan and Korea. Accomplished local artists Rohit Verma and Milan Sharma also joined the group. A Gold Medallist of University of Jammu, Rohit Verma has over 30 National arts camps to his credit in addition to the State Award. Milan Sharma equally holds a creditable position in the field of visual arts.
The group of artists desired ICCR to initiate visual arts activities in Jammu and Kashmir particularly its regular International camps in the picturesque locations of the state. ICCR has a tradition of organising Artists Residency of International artists in India which provides immense opportunities for the Indian artists to have artistic and creative interaction with the visiting International artists. The group of artists which interacted with Regional Director along with the representative of local artists demanded that Jammu Centre of ICCR should initiate to offer such kind of opportunities to the local artists and also sponsor the artists of this region abroad for their workshops, residency, and shows.
Balwant Thakur assured to take up the issue with the higher authorities and also informed that soon ICCR Jammu will showcase the works of International artists in the series of International exhibitions planned to be held in Jammu. One such exhibition ‘Maitri’ featuring the works of the artists of SAARC will be organised in Jammu soon.
