KATRA, Nov 24: Cardiac team of SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital performed an interventional procedure on an obstructed left main coronary artery of a 60-year-old patient using an innovative percutaneous coronary intervention and stenting or PCIS (popularly known as balloon angioplasty to remove the obstruction).
The patient’s angiography showed 80%-90% blockage of left main coronary artery. Usually this disease is treated by performing CABG which is commonly known as by-pass surgery. As the patient had multiple co-morbidities like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a body weight of 40 kg, he was thus a high risk surgical candidate.
Given the condition of the patient, the cardiac team comprises of interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeon, decided treatment through non-surgical intervention.
Dr Mohd Maqbool Sohil, treating cardiologist said, “Obstructive diseases of left main artery are seen in 4-6 percent of angiographies and is potentially a fatal condition if not treated urgently. We are happy that we could successfully complete this complex procedure in less than one hour”.
During the procedure, Dr Sohil reached the obstructed artery by inserting a probe through the wrist using radial artery route. The patient was on a quick path to recovery in only a few hours and was discharged 24 hours later.
