NEW DELHI, May 3:
On World Press Freedom Day, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday lauded the media for braving all odds and acting as frontline warriors along with doctors, police and others in combating COVID-19 pandemic and urged the journalists to always remain committed to the cardinal principles of journalism.
”I also laud the media for braving all odds and acting as frontline warriors along with doctors, police and others in combating COVID-19 pandemic”.
Mr Naidu said except during the Emergency, the Indian media has always remained committed to independence.
He urged the journalists to always remain committed to the cardinal principles of journalism including truth, accuracy and ethics.
”On World Press Freedom Day, I urge Indian media to always remain committed to the cardinal principles of journalism- truth, accuracy, impartiality, accountability, fairness and ethics and act as the watchdog of democracy & society at large,” he said in his missive.
Mr Naidu urged media to place the welfare of the common man and progress of the nation at the centre of all its activities. ”In particular, there is a need for greater focus on agriculture and rural development,” he maintained.
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day or World Press Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression. (UNI)
