Jammu, July 4: Dr Naheed Soz, Managing Director of Jammu and Kashmir Women’s Development Corporation (JKWDC) has been nominated by the Government of India to a high level Committee on the Status of Women which will undertake a comprehensive study related to gender issues in order to understand the status and development of women since 1989 and will further evaluate appropriate necessary policy interventions based on a contemporary assessment of women’s needs.
The 15-member panel will examine the overall status of women including the socio-economic, health and nutritional, legal and political status disaggregated by rural and urban population, economic and social position. The analysis is expected to take into account cross-regional differences and focus on inequalities both within and outside the household.
Dr Soz’s nomination to this prestigious panel comes on the heels of a major National Award for JKWDC as the best State Channelizing Agency of National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation for the year 2010-11, for empowerment of persons with disabilities by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The award was presented to Dr Naheed by Mukul Wasnik Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment.
Dr Naheed has a exemplary performance to her credit wherein during her tenure as Managing Director JKWDC she has disbursed term loan to the tune of Rs 43 crore among 6510 women beneficiaries, besides Rs 3.43 crore microfinance to 1372 SHGs. Apart from constructing 12 women community halls under Swayamsiddha Scheme, JKWDC has conducted various vocational and skill up gradation training programmes in which more than 11,000 women beneficiaries were benefited. During her tenure corporation has conducted more than 542 awareness camps in every part of the state sensitizing 1,62,600 women beneficiaries and further facilitated their participation in national level exhibitions. 1,780 Self Help Groups have also been framed in 13 blocks comprising of 26,700 members and registered block level societies.
