UDHAMPUR, Oct 14: Under-trial Jatinder Singh alias Raja, son of Nagar Singh of Gandhi Nagar, died under mysterious circumstances at District Jail Udhampur, here today.
According to the Jail authorities, the under-trial committed suicide by hanging himself in bathroom of the barrack, where he was lodged with other jail inmates. “He was immediately shifted to District Hospital Udhampur where he died,” said the Superintendent Jail, Harish Kotwal.
The deceased was main accused in the Amandeep murder case and had been facing trial under the Court of II Additional Judge Jammu in case FIR number 247/2009, Police Station Gandhi Nagar under Section 302 RPC.
The Jail Superintendent told the Excelsior that Jatinder Singh was found hanging with his Jeans pent from door of the bathroom, around 4.14 pm this afternoon. He was spotted by another under-trial who informed the Sentry on duty, Kotwal said and added that despite immediately shifting Jatinder Singh to Udhampur hospital through a proper jail police escort party, he did not respond to the treatment and was declared dead.
When contacted, Superintendent of District Hospital Udhampur, Dr Vijay Basnotra said that the under-trial was brought dead by the Jail escort and there was apparently some mark of hanging on his neck. “However, exact cause of death would be established only after the postmortem, which shall be conducted tomorrow morning,” he added.
Soon after the death of under-trial, a four-member board of doctors was constituted by the Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Ravinder Kumar for conducting postmortem of the body.
However, it could not be done today as family members of the deceased had not reached the hospital by the Sunset.
The Jail Superintendent also disclosed that mother of the deceased and his brother-in-law had visited Jatinder Singh this afternoon.
Meanwhile, Udhampur Police has registered a case of inquest proceeding in this regard under Section 174 of CrPC for further investigation into the matter.
