Murtaza corners Minister on illegal occupants issue

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Mar 14: Opposition PDP member Murtaza Ahmed Khan today cornered Minister for Agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir on the issue of illegal colonies/ occupants in Jammu city and action taken in this regard by the Government.
The issue was raised by the PDP member in the Upper House today and Ghulam Hassan Mir was responding on behalf of Minister In-charge, Urban Development and Urban Local Bodies, Nawang Rigzin Jora. Mr Khan asked whether it is fact that number of inhabitations have sprung up in violation of laws and rules by forcible occupation of Government land at Qasim Nagar and Sidhra.
The Minister claimed that there were some illegal occupants in Qasim Nagar behind Exhibition Ground in Jammu and no such illegal occupations were there in Sidhra area. Giving numbers he said there were 88 such illegal occupants in Qasim Nagar.
The PDP member said if there were no illegal occupants in Sidhra then why a large number of them were dislocated in Sidhra by using force by JDA and what action has been taken so far against the illegal occupants of Qasim Nagar. As the Minister could not give the satisfactory reply, the PDP member repeatedly pressed for the response from Government. Though the Chairman tried to pacify the member finding the Minister in discomfort situation, Mr Khan continued to attack and corner the Minister.
Mr Khan said it was strange that he asked for the action taken against illegal occupants and the Government has replied that Qasim Nagar Colony will be regularized. Why there are different yardsticks. Will they regularise the other illegal Colonies as well. As the Minister was unable to respond up to the satisfaction of the member, the Chairman, apparently came to the rescue and not allowed the member to press for his reply. The question of the Opposition member, however, put the Government in an ‘uneasy’ situation.
