Movie on malnourished children of Palghar wins award at Hollywood Film Fest

THANE: At a time when the Maharashtra Government is struggling to keep starvation and malnutrition under check in tribal parts of the state, especially the newly-formed predominantly tribal Palghar district, a documentary made on the plight of tribals in the region has been selected as the best flick at an International film festival.

Produced by Vishal Vasu and Kaushal Goswami, the movie ‘Hunger’, filmed in the tribal areas of Palghar, has won in two competitions – Hollywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival and Los Angeles Independence Film Festival.

The flick, which had won the Best Film award for 2017 at the Hollywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival, was written and directed by Yogini Surve, who has been working in tribal districts since long. The organisers have sent her a communication in this regard and the award, which comprises a beautiful trophy, will be presented to her on January 27.

The film was made with the support and assistance from two social organisations — Shramajivi Sangathana and Samarthan, which have been fighting and working for the cause of tribals and for their upliftment. It is the upshot of the death of a tribal kid Sagar Wagh, which kicked up controversy among the tribals and the State Government had to face a lot of flak from all quarters.

The tribals in the region and taluks launched a serious agitation, protesting against the Government’s apathy and negligent attitude towards the suffering of tribals. The absence of proper health care facilities and nutritional assistance to the community, which resulted in largescale malnutrition among the tribals, was the subject matter for over a year in the region and since then, the Government has been struggling to keep it under control, but to no avail.
