JAMMU, Aug 6: A mother committed suicide along with her infant by jumping into river Chenab in Ramban district this morning.
Reports said that 24-years old Veena Devi, wife of late Surjit Singh of village Kappi in Ramban tehsil reached bank of river Chenab at Maitra this morning and threw her one and half year old male baby into river before herself jumping in the gushing waters of Chenab.
Though some locals immediately rushed to the spot and tried to fish out the bodies but their efforts failed to yield any result due to strong current of the water.
Later, a case was registered at Ramban Police Station.
During preliminary investigation, it came to fore that husband of Veena Devi was murdered last year by some persons at Shimla where he was working to earn livelihood for his family. Since then Veena Devi was in the disturbed state of mind.
