Moral education must to stop violence against women: IG

SRINAGAR, Sept 24: Department of Students Welfare, University of Kashmir and Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), organized a debate on the topic “Laws are not powerless in preventing crime against women and children”.
Government Degree College M A Road, represented by Mehwish Shafi and Asma Zahoor, lifted the annual IIPA Cup. 26 participants from different universities and colleges of the Valley participated in the debate. Majority of the debaters spoke against the motion.
Vice Chancellor KU, Prof Talat Ahmad, presided over the valedictory function of the debate while IGP Kashmir Abdul Gani Mir was the guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Talat Ahmad said job of universities should not be just to offer degrees but to evolve young leaders who can lead the society for better. He expressed happiness the way women are being empowered in Kashmir and this he said is the sign of a bright future for the place.
IGP Abdul Gani Mir   said that laws to protect women here are more progressive than west and Europe but the problems lie at the implementation stage. He questioned the efficacy of educational institutions in imparting moral education which he said is a must to curb violence against women. The IGP asked women to come forward and participate in the economic activities to see an end to subjugation against them
Earlier Prof Nelofar Khan, DSW KU, presented welcome address and said that these events help students to give vent to their talent. She said the recommendations of the debate need to be looked into be the concerned agencies.
A M Watali Vice Chairman IIPA JK region branch   said that laws are always in a process of evolution and the present laws are not powerless in any way to safeguard the rights of women.
