Modern Education sans Moral Values

Prof Javed Mughal
The threadbare debates are required to be held on this issue since it pertains to the success of the very survival of the mankind on this planet. Some one has rightly said, “If you have to live with money and all the luxuries of the world without tasting the sweet fruit of love and affection; mutual understanding-the bedrock of the life the original; you have lived only one of the many installments of life. The Moral values are of-course, inevitable to make an individual complete human being in the society. Education sans moral values is just a technique to make human being a mechanical entity having no heart to pulsate enabling one to empathize with another human being wriggling and writhing in pains; no eyes to spot out the distinction between the right and the wrong; and no mind to be exercised in a formative way. There is no doubt that in the entire western block the moral values have been detached from the basic concept of modern education but we in India-a locus of moral up-gradation; humanization, ethical orientation and spiritual regeneration can not afford to go even a single step further with our educational process sans the very blend of moral values. Technically speaking the govt. educational institutions are run by the dint of legal norms where the moral and ethical values can only be extended to the students in schools in causal manner but since these values are not the quintessence of our educational system, they can not be imposed on the students. But where down the centuries and decades together, the elders have been respected, man has been seen in the image of a very special artistic excellence of God, where younger have ever been loved and equals have been befriended; we can not afford to keep our educational system at a distance from the moral values. At the same time, it is a matter of great anguish that even in our system of education, prevalent in this sub-continent; the moral values are discerned to be slipping away from the life-texture of the students now-a-days. The modern education is making the current generation merely a knowledgeable flesh and blood machines having no perceptions, emotions and sentiments at all. Let the parents reprimand their child a bit and the next moment the later will consume poison or hang himself and leave tears in the eyes of his parents. Go and be a little harsh to the child in school or college and the next moment the later will manage a big protest on the road against the teacher or file and FIR against him. This is of-course, no advancement but a multi-dimensional backwardness which is nibbling into the very infrastructure of our culture and ethical foundation that has ever been a mark of uniqueness of our national heritage. This is the perceptible degradation of our moral standard despite being well-read and a package of knowledge and all that. On the other hand, ask a three year old child as to who is the Prime Minister of India, not only of India, he will tell you the names of ten other Prime Ministers of the world. We shall find him fully computerized full of names of film actors, the political stalwarts, the currencies of the world, biggest and the smallest, the longest and the shortest and everything going on in the world but we shall be surprised to find him unable to understand the word ‘respect’ for the elder and ‘love’ for the younger. The defect lies in our modern style of education where we have always taught our student that ‘L’ stands for ‘Lion’ but we never told him that ‘L’ also stands for ‘Love’, we taught him that ‘H’ stands for ‘hand’ or ‘head’ but we did never let our child know that ‘H’ also stands for ‘Humanity’ and we taught this innocent child about ‘A’ for ‘Apple’ but not ‘A’ for ‘Affection’. Here lies the fundamental fault with the modern standard of education. This is the modern education we are imparting to our children these days. The systematic and well balanced growth and development of an individual is possible only when our heart and mind equally flower and flourish otherwise you are disturbed and divided. The knowledge we are extending to our upcoming generation is just a food for our mind and what about the heart that plays an equal role in abstaining us from being a ferocious animal which we have almost become at the moment but we don’t realize since we have ceased to have human heart to feel and a rational mind to think. The rules and regulations and moral as well as ethical checks and balances are created just to save humanity and to differentiate us from wild animals. Religions were created to control the feelings and sentiments of the mankind but not even an iota of percentage of people in our society observes or follows religious canons. Instead, we have become so stuffed with the mechanical knowledge that now instead of being guided by the religious dictates, we use religions to generate an inhuman atmosphere all around. The entire universe has been put on the road to a major disaster because of our innate reflexes and outer actions unleashed by the moral and ethical restraints. It is time we must think and rethink the role of academicians and educational centers to reshape the modern educational structure and make the moral and ethical education an important and pivotal part of education.
