JAMMU, May 6: Following a strong protest by the students and intervention of MLA Jammu West, ongoing work for construction of a building on cricket ground of GGM Science College was stopped today.
The work for construction of Administration Block for the proposed Cluster of Colleges, was initiated by the Department of Higher Education.
The trouble erupted this morning after a number of the college students assembled at the construction site and started protesting against the ongoing work. Demanding immediate stoppage of the construction work, these students under the banner of different organizations, like Jammu Justice Secular Forum (JJSF), NSUI, PYF and others, raised slogans against the Higher Education Department and the College authorities.
The protesting students were addressed by Vikram Singh Chib, working president JJSF and Neeraj Kundan, NSUI president, who alleged that the Higher Education authorities and College administration were destroying the heritage and glory of GGM Science College by building structure on playgrounds too. They warned that the students would not allow anybody to change the nature of the play grounds by constructing a building on it.
Meanwhile, MLA Jammu West, Sat Sharma CA also reached the spot and agreed with the protesting students that no building structure should be raised on the play ground. He talked to the college Principal Dr Satinder Singh and also rang up the Commissioner Secretary Higher Education, Sarita Chouhan, who ordered stoppage of the construction work.
